If she’s that close to Birmingham, depending on which way (east or west), I might can drop by. [sub][sup] It’d be great to stay over and use the kidnapped excuse, but I doubt anybody’d pay any form of ransom. :D[/sub][/sup]
I will probably be more likely to make it to the Zoo get-together. Now watch it be 300 degrees that day, or worse, rain. (I am SUCH an optimist, am I not?)
If there’s some way to get to this BamaDope, barring an all-weekender, I’ll be there. And I guess I’ll bring a calculator, since Ogre’s probably not going to be attending.
[shameless flirt]And Osip, just what would be soooo bad about me making you do anything? ;)[/shameless flirt]
The world gets smaller every day… Now my curiosity’s really up, since the company that I work for is in the process of filling a director’s position. Anywho, you’ve got me scratching my head about these distances…if it takes 30 minutes for me to get to the Palacial Estate, and 30 more minutes to get from there to B’ham, how does it take me about 2 hours to get from my house to B’ham? Do you know a shortcut, or is the Estate that big  ? (Been awhile since I’ve been to B’ham, I guess MMMV.)
The Zoo idea sounds cool, and there’s also the world renowned Botanical Gardens right across the street (for the vegans ).
LOL, Hob. Clearly you haven’t seen the pictures of the House.
Okay… it’s 58 miles from the House to Newnan. I can make the drive (using 27) in between 30-45 minutes. I underestimated the trip to B’ham… it’s 70 miles from the House, straight interstate, which is between 45-an hour.
Of course, I drive like a maniac. So YMPDV.
Okay, folks. Putting the Kitty Paw down now. Here’s the plan…
Dates: August 9-11
Location: Birmingham
Tentative schedule:
Friday afternoon, arrival.
Friday evening: movies and dinner at the Kitty House.
Saturday: Post-breakfast, head into B’ham to the Zoo and surrounding attractions (the botanical gardens sound very nice).
Saturday evening: dinner, clubs, fun.
Sunday: Brunch. Departure.
Anyone who will be requiring pick-up and drop-off at the airport, let me know. Birmingham is actually a lovely airport, and cheaper to fly into than Atlanta, but if you must use Hartsfield we’ll still come and get you.
Anyone driving in, email me and I’ll get you directions.
Closer to the Event I’ll need to know who I’ll be putting up. Already got Osip, Geo, Unca, and Lindy.
The botanical gardens look absolutely beautiful. Take a look at some of the flowers here.
Oooh, and if we go to the Birmingham Zoo, we can feed the lorikeets! According to the site, “these small colorful parrots from Australia are trained to land gently on your arm and sip nectar from your cup.”
I am so there! As I was telling bobkitty, I don’t really know any of you fine BamaDopers except for her, but I’m just sure it’ll be swell. Just don’t hurt me…too much.
Haven’t bought my ticket yet, but I’m gonna do it tomorrow.
Woohoo! My first official Dopefest (apologies to Arden Ranger; it was transcendently lovely meeting you, and we must do it again soon, but I’ve always thought of a Dopefest as being composed of more than two Dopers).
Really? That’s too smashing! Can we please go to the tea room? I’ll be good, I promise.
And BK, they don’t just have plain old run-of-the-mill lemurs – they have black and white ruffed lemurs. Oooh, fancy! I’m really excited about getting a chance to see the snow leopards. I was excited about the red pandas, too, until I saw a picture and realized they look more like raccoons than “normal” pandas.
I, um…just assumed since it was YOUR house for this Dopefest, that you could go without mention…you’re the given…you know, the omnipotent, omnipresent, immutable, beautiful, sexy, leather-pants-wearing Goddess or something.
(Please believe that. The reality is that I’m rather dumb.)
Also, I think Zappo is a maybe.
Titles will come the next time I post the list. I have to think about this one.
I’m really just doing this to bump this thread (and get bobkitty to answer my e-mail), but, Serendipity, red pandas are so cute!! They look like a cross between raccoons and cats! They’re darling!
