Bananas in cereal: what food add-ons/ins are your favorite?

I have hated bananas all my life with the fire of a thousand suns. However, my mother recently made a whole wheat banana bread she begged me to try (it was great) which prompted me to buy some bananas on my own. On a whim, I thought I’d try a sliced banana in my Fiber One honey cluster cereal. It was beyond wonderful, and now I make it a habit several days a week. I can’t believe I’ve hated bananas in vain for…well, forever. I still don’t like eating a whole banana, it makes me a tiny bit queasy.

What delightful food add-ons or “ins” do you love, that you regret learning about as late as you did?

Pickled beets in a salad. I can’t make chef’s salads any more without the pickled beets; they are so yummy that I don’t want the salad if it doesn’t have the beets.

Anchovies on a caesar salad, of course!

For a while I couldn’t eat ice cream unless I topped it with chocolate sauce, peanuts, and a little marischino cherry juice.

I like the freeze dried strawberries that come in the Special K Strawberry. I’ve never come across them as part seperate and partial of the special K in the supermarkets… can you get a bag or pouch of dried (freezedried) strawberries? Even unripe and blemished berries do well in that process, as it intensifies the sugars and lessens the sour.

My local food coop carries a wide variety of freeze-dried fruit. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen strawberries.

This thread is making me hungry.

devilsknew and Athena, I actually have found them (because I love them entirely too much) but a bag of them cost FAR more proportionally than they do simply buying the cereal on sale. So I buy the cereal on sale, and sometimes pick out the strawberries.

When I make macaroni and cheese, I always add a slice of actual cheese, which makes it much creamier. I almost always also add either a can of tuna or some salsa.

I like to add raisins to things. The first thing I discovered that was better with raisins was a peanut butter & honey sandwich when I was a kid. Then as an adult, I figured out they were good in salads. As an even older adult, I found they were good in whatever sort of quiche or turnover they local vegetarian place makes, with spinach, cheese and raisins. omg!

Sunflower seeds. Especially good on salad, they can make anything taste better.

Parmesan (from the classic green can) is a nice addition … according to my kids anyway.

Strawberries in cereal, and fruit (dried cranberries, dried cherries, or fresh cut up apple) in salads.

I also like to add raisins to my oatmeal.

Cheese and hot sauce are my go to items for adding to a dish.

Mmm, Special K Strawberry- the university caf carries it, and I try to eat it for breakfast every day. I have to get up early enough, though, or they’ll be all sold out.

My mother found something similar: Kashi Strawberry Fields. It gets used up very fast in my house, leading me to complain that Strawberry Fields aren’t forever after all.

What kind of cheese? I’ve tried parmesan (the real stuff) and it turned out a bit too rich. Eyes fridge would pepperjack work? FYI, I typically use the low-sodium Annie’s stuff.

Superhal, this is why this thread is great. I just started adding peas to my salads, even though for YEARS I’ve added them when at a decent salad bar. I also add sunflower seeds every time at the salad bar without fail, yet have never bought them for home. Thanks for the reminder.

I like to add cereal into other cereal. Grape Nuts especially make a crunchy addition to almost any other cereal. Same with granola or Cocoa Krispies. In fact, I like to mix several cereals almost every time now. I can’t believe it took me this long to say “Hey, I’ve got a whole cabinet full of breakfast cereal, why do I have to eat one kind at a time?”. It takes cereal eating to another whole level of awesome.

Now I want to go to the buffet, just for the salad bar. Thanks a lot guys. I almost always add peas to my homemade mac and cheese, sometimes I get wild and use mixed veggies.

Freeze-dried strawberries!

Blueberries to cereal. When I was younger they sorta icked me out having them in there. I always preferred bananas. But now, I love the bust of them and always throw them in when I have them.

I love buying chopped almonds too. I buy them randomly for baking, and use the rest for my cereal.

lindsaybluth… i LOVE Fiber One cereal with Bananas. LOVE IT!!!

I should correct myself. It is called, “Special K Red Berry”… hmmmph, leave it to Battle Creek… I guess “strawberry” wasn’t copy-right-able.

It’s not a real hamburger unless it has beetroot on it.
