This may be old news, but I just stumbled upon this article last night. The article is from this past July.
I was a huge fan of BoB, and I’m really looking forward to this one. I wonder if they’ll follow a real group of soldiers again as they did with Easy Company. Anyways, real exciting stuff (for me anyways). Too bad it likely won’t be out for at least a couple years.
The article pretty much says everything I know about this: 1) takes place in the Pacific, not Europe; 2) not based on a book (although I don’t know if it will be based on a real-life company or not) and 3) won’t come out soon enough. Yes, I’m totally stoked about it as well.
I just hope they do things a little differently from BoB1, specifically that they let us figure out which character was which every so often. The guys in BoB1 were a blur the first time I watched it.
(Also, I hope their timing is a little better this time. The first two episodes of BoB1 aired on Sunday, September 9, 2001.)
I, too, was really excited when I heard that Hanks/Spielberg were going to do a Pacific version of WWII.
Even though it will not be based on a specific book, I still hope that we get the “these are the real guys that did this” like we did with BoB. I can read all about the Battle of the Bulge, but to see one of these guys say “Yeah, it was pretty cold” and then to have the episode show what it was like…very powerful stuff.
As to “better timing”…WTF? HBO could not know about the events of Sep 11th beforehand. And even afterward, what actually got the US involved in WWII? Oh, yeah…a sneak attack on our country that killed thousands of people.
In preparation for the Pacific theater, I recommend the book Flags of our Fathers. It’s about the Marines (and one Navy corpsman) who raised the flag on Iwo Jima in that famous photo.
