Bands/Musicians whose music hasn't "aged" well...

Cat Stevens. Great song structure and writing, but godawful synthesizers and hand-clap machines have ruined the listening of much of his songs for me.

Most teenagers outgrow heavy metal. My poor parents suffered as I explored Motley Crew, Molly Hatchet, Sabbath etc. By the time I turned 15, I’d moved on.

Funny how those old metal groups still grab 12 year old boys attention. They’ll always sell cd’s because there’s always a new group of teenagers.

Anyone still listen to Emerson Lake and Palmer? It’s been 25 years since I’ve thought of them.

KISS. They were Rock Gods during the 70’s and 80’s. I go back to there original stuff now and I am amazed at how *bad *the production quality is, especially, Peter Criss’ drumming.

I still rock out to Rock and Roll All Night, though.

I had an almost precisely identical experience with The Monkees.

You don’t understand headbangers much, do you? Nobody is ever into Slayer for a summer, dude.

Are you looking for music that you enjoyed back then which doesn’t sound good now, or musicians who were good back then but their recent stuff is lousy?

That’s a good example. While there are some good songs on their first album, most of Tarkus does not hold up well at all (if it ever did).

Tarkus is fucking brilliant.

I thought it was pretty much albums and songs that were once enjoyed or were big hits and sound dated and bad today.

Thing is, most older music that doesn’t hold up well usually gets forgotten quickly anyway; I know there were a lot of cheesy (and not in a good way) music hits in the 80s and early 90s, but I can hardly remember any of them. Let’s see…

A bunch of songs in the late 80s and early 90s by Heart strike me as not holding up well.

The aforementioned Elton John’s music from the same general time was pretty lame, IMO.

Starship was just horrible.

Some old-school rap comes off pretty bad but I can’t name any off the top of my head.

I’m torn on some others like Loverboy and Human League, because some of their music serves as a guilty pleasure for me.

Fuck man, I am a 36 year old corporate yuppie type and I still have those on all my favorites lists and listen to them almost daily. I am downright preppy and so are my coworkers that listen to the same thing. I asked an executive if he knew of any good, new heavy metal just last week. I wanted something like Guns and Roses or Metallica and so did he (anyone?). I think you are being a strange kind of snob with that comment. There are tons of people that grew up in the 80’s that still love that style of heavy metal. I won’t say it has aged that well but that isn’t everything either. Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow get made fun of all the time yet they can still sell-out large arenas any time they want to while popular performers in the current style will be gone next year.

check out the link in post #26 of this thread, and then you can go to this thread here for new metal or you can check out my blog.

Thank you. I am happy to read that other 80’s dinosaurs like me don’t generally like current incoherent scream metal but there is quality metal still being made. That was always my problem with the newer stuff. I will check those out.

I’m 64. I suspect many of my co-workers think of me as this sweet, conservative old lady who likes to knit. But I put on my headphones at work and listen to Iron Butterfly, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, the Who, the Doors, Duran Duran, Guns and Roses, and lots of other oldies that I still like.

Well, you know what they say: Flowers and beads, that’s one thing…

Are you happy?

I’m happy enough to give you most anything you want! You must be my mirage.

Damn, I love that band! Nice to know others remember them too.

First concert I ever want to. San Diego Sports Arena, 1969. They recorded it for the Iron Butterfly Live album.

As someone else mentioned, “Take me to the Pilot” still holds up even though it’s a little nonsensical, maybe that’s why actually, not all the schmaltz or kitsch we are used to with Elton.

As for shangnasty, I’m not really into metal myself, but I do like this new stuff Tyrants

I actually bought 3 of their albums back in the day. And I never bought albums if they didn’t have at least one recognizable hit song – except in this case. And I didn’t think anyone else remembered them.
