Bands that I will never see

I’ve noticed a trend in my music listening habits. Seems I tend to like bands that at least one member has died, and as such, I will never hear a new album from, or be able to see live in concert. Not a big deal, I don’t really go to concerts, but, I dunno… I am sharing.

Some examples :
The Doors - Jim Morrison, lead singer of course

Led Zeppelin - John Bonham (sp?) - Drummer, so the rest of the band is still around, but still, not the same

The Beatles - John Lennon - althought technically, they broke up before he died, still…

AC/DC - Bonn Scott, lead singer. Nothing wrong with Brian Johnson, just, Bonn was cooler.

Jimi Hendrix Experience - yeah well, that one is obvious, no?

Queen - Freddie Mercury again lead singer…

Metallica - Cliff Burton (?) Orignal bassist - ok, that one doesn’t really count, they’ve continued on, but still…

The Muppets - Jim Henson - ok that one doesn’t count either, but “Rainbow Connection” IS on my playlist at work

Beethoven - Alright another one that doesn’t quite count, but he was my favorite composer back when I was a little one taking piano lessons

Reminds me of that Monty Python song (GAH! Graham Chapman there’s another one) - Decomposing Composers…

I mean, some of these people died before I was born… and most died before I started listening to them. Anyone else finding their musical tastes are all dying off?

Just Kurt Cobain.

I can’t help but wonder if he would have become passe like Eddie Vedder or if he would have evolved and become a legend.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, man. My ex-boss saw him right before he died. I didn’t get a chance. The ex-boss makes fun of me all the time about it.

He would have done some really cool stuff (above and beyond the music he had already gifted us with) if he had lived.

I won’t go see Ozzy after Randy Rhodes died. And The Who sucks without Keith Moon.

Sublime - Bradley Nowell - Tragic loss.

The lead singer of INXS, Michael Hutchinson.

Jack beat me to it. Sad, sad, sad.

Turp, I don’t think so.

INXS? Eh, they blew monkey knuckles anyway.

I’m kinda pissed off that I’ll never get to see Talking Heads. Nobody died, they just can’t stand each other. Fortunatly they did at least make the movie Stop Making Sense.

I’m with Jack and Demo on this one. Bradley Nowell died just weeks after the release of “Sublime” - their breakthrough album. Tragic, indeed.

My Sublime directory of MP3s is over a gig. If either of you guys want, I can send you a CDR full of Sublime bootlegs. Just email me your address.

Oh, and as an added bonus, the CDR will contain the full 32 minute Raleigh Theodore Sakers monologue. Holy shit, what a nut that guy is!

Never got to see him live, I was just too young and too far from Texas. I do play guitar, and while I don’t consider him a hero of mine, he’s definitely a big influence. Rarely does someone stick out enough from the crowd to make that impression on me, and when I find one, I feel like I’ve got to share.

About a year ago, I saw an episode of Austin City Limits that featured a guitar player/songwriter named Monte Montgomery, who does things with an acoustic guitar that make my eyes water. This isn’t “strum one-four-five on the Martin” blues–Monte makes his guitar scream. He’s not even chiefly a blues player, but his guitar work is very distinct and original. I turned my brother on to him about the time I saw him on ACL, and my brother’s since obtained most of Monte’s recorded work. Amazing Texas guitarist, tight and talented backing bands, covers of songs done twice better than the originals (he does a great Little Wing, and he also covers many of Mark Knopfler’s (Dire Straits) songs)… sounds a bit familiar, and I can’t help but think it’s almost too good to last.

I wish I could provide links to more of his music, but certain music publishers don’t think I should be allowed to share music I like with friends. http://www.google.com/keyword/monte%20montgomery is a great place to start, and if you appreciate $15.00 CDs as much as I do, the Napster networks usually offer lots of his work. If I could give money directly to an artist for the things he does I enjoy, Monte would get a big check.

My town is pretty far out of the way and big name acts rarely come here. Starting 15 years ago, I thought I’d never see Iron Maiden. I gave up any last glimmer of hope a few years ago when Bruce left the band.

And last fall I heard rumor that Geoff Tate left Queensryche. Real bummer I thought - another one of my absolute favorite bands I’ll never get to see.

Then last month my brother called from Phoenix AZ to say that both bands are intact and doing a show! And Rob Halford’s (of Judas Priest fame) new band opens for them!

It’s gonna cost me upwards of $1k to get there and see the show, but I realize this is probably the very last chance I’ll ever get to see any of the acts. I’m such a lucky man…

Michael Hutchence, actually. But thanks for playing, John has some lovely consolation prizes for you. John?

What about Jerry Garcia? No Deadheads here?

Pne I always regretted not getting to see live:

Frank Zappa.

I’m still harboring hope of seeing Alice in Chains live, but somehow I doubt it’s gonna happen.
