Chad Kroeger’s little side project band ‘Theory of a Dead Man’ pretty much clone each new song. And you know how that cloning thing works after a few times…
Did he ever decide he believes in taking an occasional shower?
Agree about the Ramones. They wrote the perfect song over and over.
Really? Because I swore that when I was listening to that Roots album, I heard jazz musicians. That’s funny. I didn’t hear that when I heard some generic Ja Rule track on the radio.
Oh, yeah, and my Madvillain album? I don’t think I’ve ever heard supervillain themes or accordion samples used in rap, either. And his voice is pretty distinctive, too. Very refreshing.
That old, crackly recording of a violin that I heard in Deltron 3030’s Madness is quite beautiful - especially the way it ends. I’m sorry that I’ve missed it in every rap song ever produced up until now.
While I don’t agree with that, it did remind me that Missy Elliott’s singles have all sounded the same for a while. Of course, I like them all.
Circa 1988 John Fogerty was sued by his previous record company who said he was plagiarizing the music they owned in his new songs (i.e., he was plagiarizing himself). This led a friend of mine to comment, “It’s a fine line between having a distinctive style and all your music sounding the same.”
I can’t believe I’m the first person to mention the “musical” abortion that is Three Doors Down.
And I suppose Five for Fighting could fall in this, too.
IIRC, John brought a guitar into court to show everyone his recording/writing style.
(The?) Offspring.
On the slightly more obscure side The Feelies are certainly guilty of this much of the time. Thankfully I like that one song :).
- Tamerlane
One unusual case related to the OP is Neil Young on “Sleeps With Angels”. Normally, he’s an all-over-the-place kind of guy. But on that album there are 3 songs that are basically identical. Weird.
When I read the title of this thread the first band I thought of was Nickleback.
Blink 182 seems to release the same songs over and over as well. I heard their new (?) song on the radio on the way home this evening and thought it was the one that they’d released earlier that sounds just like it, or maybe the one they released before that one that sounds like both of the newer ones.
The Ramones?
Were they the guys who gave us such classics as “I Wanna Beat on the Teenage Lobotomy” and “The KKK Took My Baby to Rockaway Beach”?
That’s two songs, man.
Two words – Bob. Seger.
Tag Team probably holds some sort of title for this…
Whoomp! (There It Is)
Whoomp! (There It Is) [House Mix]
Whoomp! (Si Lo Es)
Whoomp! (There It Is) [Remix 2000]
Addams Family (Whoomp)
Addams Family (Whoomp) There It Is [Remix 2000]
I don’t know if there’s a name for this effect, but to AC/DC, Ramones, ZZ Top, or Motorhead fans, all their songs are individual or unique. For people who are not into this music, I can see that every song probably seems the same.
As I am an AC/DC fan, if you play just the two opening notes, I can name the song. The only songs that really sound too similar are “Long Way to the Top…” and “High Voltage”. But I have friends that can only barely distinguish Bon Scott stuff from Brian Johnson stuff.
This applies to whole genres to, as someone mentioned rap. To me all death metal, bluegrass, or old time blues all sounds the same.
Ditto on the Linkin Park and Nickelback nominations, as well as Evanescence.
But my main nominee would be EMINEM.
God. The guy originally had some catchy lyrics; he was amusing and mildly entertaining.
But now I realize he’s a one-hit wonder who recycles.
Please, Gadfly - it’s rotten to mock the afflicted. For a man so completely deaf as Peter Morris to know anything about rap is a great achievement; we can’t realistically expect him to be able to tell the difference between Lose Yourself, Straight Outta Compton, Pokerface and Tuned Mass Damper as well.
“Tuned mass damper” is a motherfucker of a song.

When I turn on my oven, the pilot light makes the same “tick tick” sound as at the beginning of AC/DC’s Back in Black. Exact same rhythm and everything. Everytime I use the oven, I can’t help myself… tick tick tick tick bump. da bump BACK IN BLACK…"

I just wanted to nominate The Cult. A friend of mine went to see a Cult concert once. I asked her how they were. She said this:
“Well, pretty good I guess. All the songs sounded like Fire Woman. They’d start to play a song and I’d jump up and down and go ‘ooo! Fire Woman!’ and half way through the song I’d realize it wasn’t Fire Woman at all. I’m not sure if they ever played Fire Woman or if they played it 10 times.”
