I often defend his Thriller album to people making jokes about Jackson’s music. Thriller was quite possible one of the best albums produced in the 80s, it spawned many singles, and is quite possible in the running for the best album of all time. Jackson was a man who had (maybe still has) a lot of talent and nobody should be afraid to admit to owning and liking his music.
Vanilla Ice was popular in the early 90s not the 80s. At least he didn’t hit it big until the early 90s (I was in high school). While I certainly didn’t own any Vanilla Ice CDs or products and I sure as hell refused to see Cool as Ice I admit that to this day I still enjoy hearing “Ice Ice Baby.”
I’ll second the New Kids on the Block as a classic example of this phenomenon. I quite honestly always hated them, but did the “cool” kids remember my superior taste when the band suddenly become terminally unhip? No, they did not.
Yeah, I’ve never heard anyone express hatred for the Spin Doctors. I don’t think they were critical darlings or huge stars even at their peak, they were just a fun band that had several catchy hit songs. That seems to be the way they’re remembered now, to the extent that anyone thinks of them at all these days. But if I put on “Two Princes” at a party or the jukebox in a bar, I’d expect remarks like “Hey, I remember this song!” not “Oh no, not that totally lame band!”
To the OP, in the mid 1990s I was romantically involved with someone who DID love Europe’s “The Final Countdown”. In retrospect, that probably should have been my first warning that things would end badly.
Huh? Eminem’s debut album The Slim Shady LP came out 9 years after To The Extreme, well after Vanilla Ice melted.
Did Milli Vanilli ever recover from their lip-synching disaster?
Not that they ever rated highly on my radar. Come to think of it, that may be the first I heard of them.
Does anyone care about Phil Collins anymore?
They did not, and then Rob Pilatus died at age 32. Fabrice dropped a solo album in 2003.
Oh, don’t fucking pretend you don’t like “The Final Countdown”. Not in front of other people or anything, but like when you’re running and nobody can hear what’s in your earbuds but you.
Funny… when I was writing my post, I wondered to myself why Kid Rock won’t go away. He seems to have successfully switched genres to get out of the dying frat rock business-- I keep hearing him on adult-contemporary stations, oddly. Billboard says his last album in 2007 went to #1, and it’s a double platinum seller now.
Sure, the Genesis reunion tour did fairly well.
Smashing Pumpkins used to have it all.
Who hates Smashing Pumpkins?
Didn’t **Kid Rock **just do a remake of Sweet Home Alabama?
Yes, if you looked at the sales for albums by white rappers over the past century, it would be:
Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
Beastie Boys - License to Ill
Vanila Ice - To The Extreme
Other than that who do you have? House of Pain, Kid Rock, Snow, anyone else?
Only because their later albums were poorly recieved. Most hard rock fans still think their early stuff kicks ass.
/raises hand
Kid Rock is a big fan of 70s southern rock (Skynyrd, Allman Bros., Molly Hatchet, etc.).
You left out ICP and Kottonmouth Kings.
Their last album was really good, though.
Was there a band in the early '80s more popular (or more well marketed) than Journey? Those fuckers even had their own video game - and that sucked too.
They disappeared fast - I hear them now only on the crone stations.
Sweet Home and Werewolves of London.
Ditto for his Bad album. He was hot as hell with loads of talent, but then his songs began to be nowhere near as good, so I had to leave him alone. (leave him alooooneeee!!!)
His art and his personal life are two different things. I would never be ashamed to admit I am a fan. Further more, I kinda don’t believe he is a child molester. But what the heck do I know.
