The "I really loved their music for one cd, but now hate them" thread

  • if this has been done before, sue me *

So…in our lives there occasionally comes band a whose music we adore. Their cd/tape/record is quickly bought and played over and over again until you know every word to every song. But then they release more music. And you realize that everything else they make really sucks. What bands did you used to love, but now hate?
Creed- I loved their first album. I haven’t liked a single since one the on the Scream 3 soundtrack, and whenever their new single or “Arms wide open” is on the radio, I change the station as quickly as possible.

The Goo Goo Dolls- A Boy Named Goo was brilliant. Everything from the shudder-worthy “Iris” on is terrible.

Cake- I thought that Fashion Nugget was a pretty neat cd. Then I realized that the whole spoken-instead-of-sung thing was going to continue through their other music…
Yours?

Pearl Jam - After “Ten” they suck.

Live - After “Mental Jewelry” they suck.

All selections are IMHO, of course.

Mr. Bungle’s first CD was an epic masterpiece. Their next one was a totally unlistenable mess of random sounds and notes – can’t even really call it “music”.

Fear Factory’s “Demanufacture” was one of the most brilliant thrash metal albums ever released. After that they became just another generic nu-metal band.

Barenaked Ladies {i]Gordon* was great…since then, I haven’t really cared much for them.

prozzak’s “Hot Show”, for some reason.
i think there was crack in the air.

I liked Garbage’s very first album, but their music now is almost un-listenable to me. And that new song of theirs, “Androgyny?” Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.

One word:

Hootie

On the country side:

Sara Evans- The first CD, “Three Chords and The Truth” was really good. After that, she just became another soundalike female country singer on the radio.

Technically, this might not qualify, but Garth Brooks-
His albums “Garth Brooks” and “Ropin’ The Wind” had some consistently good quality songs on them. After that, he realized he was “Garth Brooks, gazillionare”. Most of his other albums haven’t come anyway near matching the quality of the first two.

Monster Magnet’s Spine of God was an excellent album, full of great hooks and emotional resonance. Everything since seems like self-parody.

Smashing Pumpkins had two extraordinary albums, one album of B-sides, and one box set that rocked my socks. Then came Ava Adore. ::full-body shudder:: And that absolutely godawful last album which I won’t even mention since it just makes me feel so unclean. EW.

Well actually they had 3 extraordinary albums, one album of B- Sides and one box set before Adore (not Ava Adore) was released which was then followed up by Machina which I guess I have to mention since you won’t.

Please try to at least make an attempt at getting the facts correct next time.

** Tori Amos** - * Little Earthquakes * rocked, * Under the Pink * was pretty good, and everything after that just sucked intensely.

Excuse me, Red Menace, but it might have occured to you that I don’t consider Gish an extraordinary album. Since “extraordinary” is an expression of opinion, I wouldn’t accuse me of not having my facts straight next time. IMHO, my statement stands: they had two great albums, a great album of B-sides, and a great box set. Then Adore sucked. I didn’t include Gish in the first place due to the fact that chronologically it arrives after the good albums and that wouldn’t have been pertinent to the OP.

And just to prove that indeed, I do have my facts straight:

Gish
Siamese Dream
Pisces Iscariot
Ava Adore
The Aeroplane Flies High
Machina

Okay?

Sorry, but I found your response pretty damn rude, all things considered. Calm down, bucko.

::slinks sheepishly back to add Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness between Pisces Iscariot and Ava Adore, then slinks back out again::

Egads.

Okay, as long as I’m being all self-righteous over The Red Menace’s righteous indignation, I might try to not be so tired anymore. Let’s try this ONE MORE TIME.

It IS Adore not Ava Adore. I’m thinking of the song on the album, not the name of the album itself. Strike one for me. However, considering this minor error and what I explained previously, I still think you were being unnecessarily rude, Red Menace. I’m willing to admit to my mistakes, however. Sorry if I offended a fellow SP fan.

Offspring - Smash was good, and then they just floundered in mediocrity before redefining themselves as a really REALLY annoying novelty act.

Matthew Good Band - their Raygun EP was good (perhaps because it was too short to be repetitive), but as the years progressed, I realized they were just playing the same song over and over again. Now I just think they’re talentless hacks.

Spin Doctors.

loved the first album “pocket full of kryptonite”, second album suuuuuuuuucked.

Hothouse Flowers

…um…

Dave Matthews Band (Under The Table was the only original creative work to come out of that group)

::d&r::

Eonwe stole mine before I could post. Liked ‘Under the Table and Dreaming’, but everything after that sounds exactly the friggin’ same. DMB, please STOP STOP STOP!!!

Also Dream Theater – loved ‘Images and Words’, and their next album was just a total suckfest.
