banned from baseball HoF

Who’s on the banned list, other than Rose and the “Black Sox”?

Here is a list of people who have been on the list.
http://1919blacksox.com/banished.htm

Some have been reinstated, such as Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle.

Most were put on the list around the time of the Black Sox scandal.

I didn’t open the link but weren’t Mantle and Mays already in the HOF at the time of their suspensions? They were on baseball’s ineligible list but were not banned from the HOF. The rule banning from HOF consideration everyone on the baseball ineligible list didn’t come about until the Rose saga.

Mantle and Mays were not put on the “permanantly ineliglible list.” They were given the equivilant of a suspension.

No one who has ever been on the PIL list has ever been reinstated.

[just to cut off a nitpick]
Steinbrenner was not on the PIL. He was punished by being banned and accepting punishment as if he were on the list, but he was never officially added to it.

No, I think M&M were ineligible to work in baseball at the same time they were working for casinos. They were told they would be reinstated as soon as they quit. They were not connected to the casinos when they were involved in baseball (except myabe spring training coaches/PR). I think the ineligible rule is older, and covered the Black Sox (i.e. Jackson). Certainly he’d have been elected if he were eligible.

Much older. Four members of the 1877 Louisville team were banned for throwing games.

The Cafe Society moderators have expressed disquiet at having sports threads in that forum. Factual sports questions should go in General Questions, polls about sports in IMHO, etc. Since this is a factual question, I’ll move it to GQ.
