Banning disco*bot

Damn!

The bot is capable of brutal honesty at least twice a day, you’ve got to give it that.

Could we trade you in for a toaster? What say you, @discobot? Turn guizot in for a toaster – would that work?

Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help.

Same for me. I haven’t seen any problems. The board runs fast for me.

The Only Thing missing is a Like Button. I would have liked your post instead of replying “me too!”.

Discobot doesn’t annoy me. I liked Clippy too in Ms Office.

OK FINE!

Generate a consensus around one additional thing Discobot can do (as a default) that would be useful / fun / interesting, and just because you are Straight Dope and have such a fantastic history with the original 2012 introduction / announcement of Discourse … I will make sure this feature gets added.

That is my gift to you :gift: :kissing_heart:

It’s a trick! Discobot is evil. If we tell you what we want, how do we know we won’t find ourselves enslaved underground by the Morlocks?

Give us a theme we can choose where discobot does not appear, please. Discobot does not have anything to say that I need to read. And thank you for the offer.

The only good thing Clippy ever gave me was the ability to turn him off forever.

Die, Clippy! DIE!

sorry, bad PCSD*.

At any rate, I find the disco*bot a trifle annoying, but unless it’s invoked on the regular, I’m kinda meh. Besides, people might find it useful learning their way around the new controls. I should probably use it myself.

Also, according to the Discourse boards, it is possible to disable it, but I think it requires an admin and would be board-wide. I don’t think we even have a new admin yet, do we? Or did I miss an announcment?

Assuming some are serious about wanting to disable this thing (and I’m not sure about that), I have to ask, why? If you don’t like it, don’t refer to it by name.

Instead of having to choose a specific theme, when the particular person might for other reasons prefer a different one, how about just an option in preferences to turn the bot off for that person?

I’m only mildly annoyed by Discobot. But it seems odd to me to respond to a lot of people complaining about things that Discobot does by offering to have Discobot do yet more things.

It does a batch of other things; in particular, popup windows making suggestions that do not, to me, seem particularly helpful – stop talking with this particular person, isn’t this thread similar to something that shares all of one word with it and was posted in 2006, and so on. It’s not that big a deal to make the windows go away again, but they are a bit of an annoyance.

I think they’re peeved that others are referring to it, thus inflicting it on them.

Someone could check to see if it’s possible to add it to the ignore or mute list. As I said, I may decide to take the tutorials so this won’t be me.

Discobot, your opinion, please?

Although I have no actual use for Disco*bot, I think he would make a great ambassador for the Straight Dope.

I just tried; it didn’t work. It wouldn’t let me select a time frame.

You can’t ignore discobot. He’s too powerful. He won’t let you. You can’t look away, and even if you could, where this forum is going, you won’t need eyes to read.

All hail discobot!

discobot, are you completely useless?
