On its face, that appears to be a superior solution. I have the impression that putting it into user-enabled preferences would be a more complex (or possibly more vulnerable, from a security standpoint) undertaking.
There are indeed site settings to disable discobot – this should be discussed with your site owners / admins.
I’m not sure what the purpose is of directing these comments to me, I don’t control the site settings here, but your site owners / admins definitely do!

Thank you for the information that admins can disable discobot; that’s useful to know. I suspect that right now they’re still busy with other stuff, but will probably get around eventually to addressing this one way or another.
The sense that I have, though, is that the folks with administrative permissions do not wish or intend to disable disco*bot board-wide. This is why I’d like the opportunity to make it invisible to me, while being happy to live with people who want to see it…seeing it. Like I was able to choose wrt avatars on the vBB platform (a choice the loss of which is another regret of mine).
Discobot, would people have forgotten that you exist if it weren’t for this thread?
