@discobot quote
Freedom is what you do with what’s been done to you. — Jean-Paul Sartre
What is with the weird obsession with discobot? It’s harmless, the fortunes amuse some people, the dice rolls have been used in some games, and yes, some people do periodically need a reminder to let other posters get a word in. Just skim over his rare posts if you hate him.
Yes, I said “him”. And yet, the board hasn’t self-destructed, even with my reckless gendering of cute little discobot.
Let’s do it again:
@discobot quote
If there is no struggle, there is no progress. — Frederick Douglass
I can’t answer that, but its not limited to Discobot. There is a strange obsession with eliminating every positive change that came with the move.
That was funny.
@discobot book
Hmmm… discobot can you shed any light on that?
@discobot fortune
Most likely
I suppose you’re going to keep a tight lip, though, because of the rampant discrimination in this thread? Oh well, thanks, discobot!
Not EVERY positive change. I’m quite happy that 502/504 errors and timeouts have gone away. But I’ll concede that that was the only positive change I needed to my Straight Dope experience. I don’t really care if everybody wants avatars, for instance, and I valued the ability to turn them off for my own viewing pleasure. I don’t consider the confiscation of that ability to be a positive change.
I hate ‘him’, yes ‘him’ he’s obviously a guy not.
And a stalker.
Sometimes he comes when called. Other times he ignores me. I know he hears. He is just being a jerk.
@discobot fortune
Let’s see if he shows up.
It is decidedly so
Aaaacccckkkk!
I really don’t give two hoots about whether Discobot stays or gets turned off, but what I am definitely not seeing here is a compelling case to turn it off.
Some people like Discobot, some don’t. There is definitely nowhere near a majority consensus that Discobot (1) needs to go and (2) is an important enough issue that we need to focus on it at the moment. We’ve got much more important things to fix before we even consider looking at things like Discobot.
I know some people don’t handle change very well, but keeping vBulletin was not an option. Making Discourse behave exactly like vBulletin was not an option. Keeping everything the same was not an option.
If you don’t like Discobot, avatars, new smilies, scroll bars, or any other changes that come with switching software, sorry, but you’re just going to have to find a way to deal with it. We have much more important things to deal with at the moment. In the grand scheme of things, we still have the same forums we’ve had, we still have over two decades worth of posts, and we have a message board that doesn’t require constant reboots and database rebuilds just to stop it from completely grinding to a halt on a daily basis. Considering that we are not a huge money-maker for our owners, and despite that they still think that we are worth pouring a lot of money and effort into us to keep us going, I personally am just happy that we still have a functional message board.
Totally agree with you @engineer_comp_geek.
Thank goodness, e_c_g. I saw #savediscobot trending on Twitter and was really worried for my new friend.
