Damn fine words, discobot. Damn fine. Well said.
True.
Really? I can think of at least one main difference (not here to advertise something) that’s primarily why those spambots get banned.
Plus discobot just gives and gives and gives, never takes. The closest he comes to asking for anything ever is when he asks you if you need help.
I invoked discobot once, and it didn’t actually answer my question. But I was impressed with the immediate nature of its vague response. BAM! like, right away.
@discobot fortune
Do you want to be banished?
ETA: Obviously I don’t quite know how to invoke it yet, but I admit I get a kick out of seeing it more often than not.
And it isn’t like spam because a poster has to do something to activate it; it doesn’t just show up on its own.
Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help
.
@discobot how do i disable discobot?
@discobot do you know the words to “Stayin’ Alive”?
Hell Yeah!
Well this just about sums it up, now doesn’t it.
Maybe soooomebody is just a little jealous of the attention being showered on the “bot.
Is that the case?
@kaylasdad99 fortune
Cancel Culture rears its head again. Keep it up and soon you’ll have Ivanka posing for Instagram photos with our discobot. Then you’ll be sorry.
The compelling reason seems to be that some people are using it just to annoy others, not for any actual purpose. We have rules against extraneous posts–no post padding, no bumping threads more than once, no resurrecting old threads without new info, etc. It makes sense that pointless posts that just invoke the bot would fall in the same category.
My reaction is just to wait and see if people get tired of abusing the bot. Hopefully we’re smart enough for that. If not, then I would propose actually making some rules, but not banning it entirely. Only if people can’t follow the rules would you get rid of it.
I think that’s much better than accusing people who see potential problems with “not liking change.” People don’t like specific changes.
And, well, since the board still goes down, I’m kinda concerned the actual reason we moved hasn’t been fixed. We did move to their servers, right? So why do I find periods where we’re down for hours, where all pages return blank? And I’m not the only one to report these.
If it’s a scheduled down time, they should tell us.
This seems too complicated. Just warn the people being jerks with @discobot and leave thar wonderful piece of shit automaton out of it.
Really? I haven’t seen this. The board has been running like a Swiss timepiece since it moved, as far as I can see.
Is there some way we could have a talking paper clip dispense helpful hints?
I resent the implication that I condone, let alone take an active part in, bot abuse. Some of my closest friends are bots.
It’s mostly early morning/late night. People mentioned it when it happened. I notice because I keep odd hours, watching my mother to make sure her oxygen doesn’t drop while she’s asleep.
It’s not a huge deal, but I do get a bit tired of everyone saying all that stuff got fixed when there are still some problems.
Mostly, I just get annoyed at anyone saying they don’t like something being told that they “don’t like change.” Though, admittedly the OP did walk into that one this time.
Meh. It’s not a big deal. I do actually think it’s most likely that people will get tired of the shiny new toy. It really doesn’t fit what we do here–except maybe in Thread Games.
And, if not, it’ll be on my list of things that I’ll try to fix with a script. I’m still waiting to see how everything shakes out before doing anything. Currently, the two I have is “hiding avatars” and maybe “hiding discobot.” Also maybe “automatically quote post if you click Reply,” if I can figure that out.
Also considering an old smileys script. But the version I want to make would be involved, having options to just fix old posts (so :rolleyes: becomes ) , the oldest smileys, or the previous smileys.
I’m not a fan of saying you have to accept things if I can figure out how to fix them, and make it an option.
Aye; things have been smooth and fast since we completed TubaDiva’s Migration.
It looks like you’re trying to get banned. Can I help?
who is Byron Pulsifier?
