Wondering why Hotmail and such are allowed for accounts @ SDMB. It kind of makes banning or other administrative actions inneftual.

I have a half decent reason. I wanted to use this name first. I typed in my email wrong in the registration (.cpm instead of com)
just logged on with own name.
After reading some of the more disturbing threads, thought anonymity might be better.
(also got murdered in debate with DavidB and Dr. F)
Decided to get old name back, e-mailed straight Dope.
realized I good do it myself by changing scylla to Scylla.
got “already have user at that e-mail” when I tried to register.
listed that I was doing this in Mpsims, and on the Master List thing.
Now I wonder why I bothered.
Am curious, because banning seems innefectual.

With all due respect, I think you may have answered your own question when talking about the disturbing threads. While I (to use a personal example) want to participate on this board up to and including swapping emails with people I’ve never met, I don’t necessarily want all 4,000 plus posters and Ghod knows how many lurkers (who don’t need an address at all) to get my RealName@home or Realname@Work address, for fear that my box will be filled with garbage from some of the more unstable characters who happen across the board from time to time.
So I have a anonomyous, easily changeable addy. If someone floods it with unreasonable stuff, I can change the address without having to let all my IRL friends and business contacts.

I have a ‘legit’ address with my local phone company, but it lists my last naem.
Its not hard to use the info on the boards, with my last name to get my UNLISTED phone number.
I now have a yahoo account. I can check my mail from anywhere easily, and my name is kellibelli_kb @ Yahoo. Try getting a phone # with that. Its safer,and as was mentioned above…if it gets filled, I can forget it and open another one.
It does make banning somewhat hopeless though.
