Barack? It's Pronounced "Ore-EYE-un"

City north of Detroit is usually pronounced Lake ORE re in. Orion.

I’m torn between it being oh-rye-un or oh-rye-in around these parts, but it’s definitely not ore-eye-un here, either.

Orion can have more than one reasonable pronunciation by the way it’s spelled.

Nuclear, by the way it’s spelled, cannot be pronounced nukular. You can’t even compare the two mispronunciations.

Growing up north of Detroit I always thought it was called ORE re in. I was in my 30’s before I heard it pronounced like the constellation. I had only ever read the word before and I pronounced it in my head like the lake.

Just like those common mispronunciations of “bury”, “busy”, “colonel”, “iron”, “Wednesday”, …

Well, now, let’s see. In graduate school I had Dr. Harold Borko as one of my professors, and he was one of the pioneers of computer based language processing theory and systems design. At UCLA the first generation online catalog for the university library was named, as he pronounced it, “Ore-ee-on”.

To the OP: it’s a red herring. If you are politically conservative and therefore still trying to defend Sarah Palin by pointing out mistakes or stumbles by left-wing speakers, it’s anything but helpful to your cause.
Stuttering or mispronouncing something doesn’t make a person stupid, even if you disagree with his politics. I don’t even think GHW Bush is stupid, in spite of the fact that he lost his dinner in a prime minister’s lap, before many dignitaries.

(FTR: FDR did in fact appear on television, although the world of pre-war TV was admittedly small.)

I always think comments of this type are intended more to defend Sarah Palin as a credible candidate for high office. It’ll take much more time, and better tactics than this, to accomplish that.

Or listened to Chicago radio broadcaster Orion Samuelson.

Mark Twain’s brother Orion Clemens pronounced the name Or-ee-on; it’s quite common and often correct. Nukular’s never correct.

Here in Okinawa, the major beer is Orion beer, pronounced the way Obama said it. Took me a while to get used to that.

I’m with the OP. I’m also glad we have a SMART president now.
