Bariatric surgery

Has anyone among the Teeming Millikons ever undergone gastrointestinal bypass surgery? My physician wants me to consult a specialist about this; the psychiatrist I have sessions with is firmly opposed to the idea, perhaps because of side effects and a possibly stifling regimen it betokens.
How about it?

I am going under Monday, in fact I just made a post asking about anesthesia and having a cold.

I’ve been trying to get this surgery for three years, but have been denied by two insurance companies, but finally was approved.

I can answer any questions you have, just post them here and I’ll answer what I know. I’ve had to undergo numerous tests, a psych evaluation, sleep studies (yes, studies, plural), upper endoscopy, bloodwork, drug tests, you name it.

Also, www.obesityhelp.com is a great site.

My consulting appointment is on March 8, with a specialist in the field. I don’t know how my age would figure (I’m nearly 60), and even the doctor who recommended it said it could have symptoms similar to diarrhea.
More to follow.

Several of us here have had the surgery. I had a gastric bypass in May 2006. Since then I’ve lost 100 pounds and have gone from a size 26 to a size 10. I’m still losing and expect to end up as a size 8, maybe a 6. I feel and look 30 years younger and my energy is high. I can walk for miles; pre-surgery I could barely waddle around the block. I can eat anything. The only thing I avoid is carbonated drinks. I never had a moment’s pain from the surgery, never even took a single Tylenol for post-surgical discomfort. I was back at work (part time light desk duties) a week after the op. There were no complications. Opting for the surgery is one of the best choices I’ve ever made. I am 100% happy with the experience. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.

Post your questions here. IANAD but I’ll answer them based on my experience. I know there’ll be a number of other gastric bypass and lapband folks who will respond, too.

diggleblop: all my best to you on Monday. I hope your surgery and recovery go smoothly!

dougie: If you are having trouble getting support for the bypass option, I wonder if you have considered the lap-band? That is what I have and I like it. I’ve lost about 167 pounds thanks to my band.
With the lap-band, there is no cutting or rearranging of your stomach/intestines. They simply put an adjustable band on the stomach to make you feel full faster. As a result, an advantage of the lap-band is that it is easier to reverse if there is any sort of problem. If you’re interested, there’s a messageboard at http://www.lapbandtalk.com for more info from others with it. Good luck in either case.
