It’s interesting but dammit, I’m having a devil of a time keeping the characters straight.
I just finished the book the show is based on. I had trouble keeping everyone straight and I could go back and reread it!
Great book, btw. Curious how the show turns out.
I watched the first two episodes in the wrong order. No wonder I couldn’t follow! I missed recording the start of what was CALLED ep 1, and then I recorded what I thought was ep 2 and then ep 1. It mad absolutely NO sense until I saw them both.
I’m intrigued, but it’s very visually dark in placed & I do have trouble keeping the characters apart.
The guy who created this show, Elwood Reid, is a sort-of friend of mine. I say sort of because we’ve never met in person but have corresponded online many, many times, and have numerous mutual real-life friends. We’ve been Facebook friends for-fucking-ever, like since Facebook first came out. I’ve been a fan of his ever since I read his autobiographical account of playing college football at UM - I checked it out from my junior high school’s library in 1999. Damn! Where does the time go?! Later on, in college, I tried to write some short fiction and Reid very kindly read my work and gave me a little bit of guidance.
All this is to say, it has been spectacular to witness his career ascend to these heights. He just has a phenomenal talent for world-building and creating characters, and it really, really shines in Barkskins. He may not have written the original source material, but his style is all over the highly-animated and three-dimensional characters and their dialog.
The show is also just beautiful to look at. It’s just fire, end of story.
I do think it’s a bit odd that nobody yet has said “TABARNAK!” on the show. But I haven’t caught up on all the episodes yet.
WTF am I watching???
I’ve come to the conclusion it’s Twin Peaks in the 1700’s.
Loosing interest fast.
One other thing: Ain’t nobody gonna be surviving those Rock-Mallet head shots everybody seems to be taking, and then perfectly fine in the next scene.
You say that like it’s a bad thing. I get it, that style is not for everyone. I like it though.
