I think it was the episode where he got drunk and ate three of the children. I definitely remember him sobering up, weeping purple tears over the gnawed bones, in the morning, but I can’t actually remember an apology.
Before this gets completely out of hand, I believe the OP is referring to Barney Fife on the Andy Griffith Show, and not Barney Rubble, Barney Stinson or Barney the purple dinosaur.
To be fair if I were an openly gay congressman from Massachusetts I wouldn’t apologize to anyone either.

No, Left Hand of Dorkness was correct. It was the episode where he got drunk and ate three of the children. Major cast change that year. The tears looked purple because black and white sets back in the day had trouble with contrast, so they only looked purple. Aunt B’s pregnancy came later, after Opie’s voice changed.
