Barware for a party -- one glass to rule them all?

Odd question here. I’m throwing a party at a DIY venue, which is not something I often do. I plan on keeping things simple, beer/wine/mojitos, plus probably a couple of bottles of bourbon from my stash. I don’t like disposable glassware so it occurred to me to pick up a few dozen glasses for guests to use. Problem is bourbon, mojitos, and wine would require 3 different glasses to be “proper”.

I had the idea to just get a bunch of small juice glasses. When I was in Portugal last summer some of the restaurants used tiny 6 oz juice glasses for the house wine, and I thought it was fun. Sort of a less than ideal glass for all circumstances but at least it’s not plastic or paper. Tacky or no?

What’s a DIY venue, and who are the guests? There are only a few circumstances where a red Solo cup won’t work. And you can get 'em made from glass now for those classier events.

I would strongly prefer small juice glasses to red Solo cups.

Especially for wine.

Not as tacky as Mason jars, for certain.

My first thought, as a non-drinker, if you’re serving soft drinks, 6 oz is awfully small. And, as a non-drinker, I never quite understood the different-glasses-for-different-drinks.

Not very helpful, am I?

Not sure what the DIY part is either, but if it leaves you liable if your guests are injured by broken glass then you should use plastic.

It’s an event space but there’s no help or supplies, I’ve gotta truck everything in and out. Wife’s birthday party, can’t have my guests drinking wine out of a red solo

Hmm, a juice glass would make for a small mojito, I guess there’s a lot of ice. I’ve never had one.

May need to rethink this.

An average adult can usually take about 24 ounces of beer before they need to start thinking about how they’re going to get home (not lip-walking yet, but approaching the magic .08 line). And about 12 ounces of wine/mojito or other mixed drink. And about 2 ounces of liquor. A one-size-fits-all glass to accommodate that sort of variety is tricky. A shot glass for beer would be ridiculous, and a 20oz beer glass for whiskey would be…overkill.

Nothing says, “Oh, it’s THAT kind of party” quite like the red Solo cup. What about those giant, thick coffee mugs? Or, more seriously, Collins glasses?

This isn’t dinner with an Italian family, so juice glasses for wine is right out. Just hit the local party store for a package or three of plastic stemmed wine glasses and a package of plastic Old Fashioned glasses. The beer drinkers will be drinking from the bottle/can anyway, so nothing for them.

I often serve everything in highball tumblers. But when it’s just me (or drinks with Wife), I drink wine, scotch, vodka (even beer) out of French Alpine Wine Tumblers.

Medium sized and exquisitely proportioned. I found a couple at POSH in Chicago, and the woman who’d brought them to the States said that they’d been served wine in them at a roadside bistro high in the French Alps. I held one up and said “This was not designed by an American.”

They look like the right hand example from Alessi here, but who wants to spend Alessi prices?

I throw it out as an idea: I’d scour the internet and local shops to find something close to these… and when Aunt Petunia raises an eyebrow ("I’m supposed to drink a ‘decorous-yet-insouciant little Pinot’ out of this, this bathroom glass?"), tell her about the roadside bistro high in the Alps.

I’d try to find something on the order of a stemless wine glass for wine, cocktails, and liquor, and let guests drink beer out of the bottles or cans it comes in.

Stemless wine glasses/tumblers for the win! Thank you digs and Esprise Me. Found a set of 12 on clearance and ordered 5. You guys rock.

Link?

C’mon, you gotta show us! We’re invested in this quest now… and might be crashing the party.

Behold! Straight from the French Alps of Macy’s.

So they’re not life changing but at a dollar something a pop I was instantly in love.

Nice! Those will look classy.

I was thinking "If** steronz** gets nice glass glasses, it’ll be like a big sign when people walk in, saying “NOT your normal cheapo party!” And one of the things people’ll be talking about.

Good job!

Stemless wine glasses is absolutely the way to go. Very versatile.

A few dozen glasses of any sort probably won’t be enough. People who switch drinks will want a new glass. I’m not pouring wine into my beer glass even if I rinse it out. And people tend to drink half and leave it. Unless you’re going to be washing glasses during the party I’d say that you’ll need to have at least three glasses per person so that you don’t run out.

If you have friends who cannot handle glass safely and then turn around and sue you, well, you need better friends. Right?
