Baseball June 2009

I’m pretty sure “or” is the only logical word there.

Toronto swept the defending World Champions and then lost two out of three to the Natinals. Life is not fair.

On the other hand, my slo-pitch team won second place in this weekend’s tournament. We played fabulous baseball, lots of sun and fresh air, players’ kids serving as bat boys and bat girls, a blast. One of my teammates hit two grand slams in one game, which I’ve never seen before (in a game in which I was a participant.)

Remember, as much fun as baseball is to watch, it’s even more fun to play!

I played softball until I was 54. The bases got longer and longer. I hated to hit a triple. It was time to quit.
The Tigers are tough to figure out. They are pulling away again after dropping 3 in a row. Pitch bad one rotation, pitch good the next. Score runs, don’t score any. Weird season.

Orioles lost in 12 innings to the Marlins. The loss is a bit disappointing, but the game never should have gone to extras in the first place. Baltimore were down 6-1 in the 8th and down 6-3 with 2 outs and no-one on in the 9th, and managed to tie the game.

I felt sorry for Florida’s Andrew Miller. He pitched seven innings, gave up 1 hit and 1 run, left with a 6-1 lead, and got a no-decision. Ouch.

We will take the next two games from the Blue Jays, dammit!. Micah Owings sucks, and needs a Rick Ankiel-esque conversion. He’s arguably a better hitter than a pitcher.

When the Brewers escape the American Central division, they will come back.

Owings is, at least by reputation, not a major league fielder at any position, so if you made him a hitter he might have to be a DH.

He hasn’t pitched that badly in his career - I mean, he hasn’t been great, but he’s been competent. He’s 26 and so it’s not quite time to give up on him yet. But if he doesn’t make it as a pitcher I’d definitely try him out as a DH. The dude can smack the ball.

With his team 5 games out, I wonder if the Joe Girardi Death Watch is due to commence? In the days of ol’ George (before he got senile or whatever) he indeed would have very little rope left (other than that available to hang himself), but Cashman pretty much runs things now.

Joel Pineiro was sharp last night, getting grounder after grounder out of the Mets. The Mets were missing their big guns, but still, a complete game shutout on 100 pitches, with only one walk, is nothing to sneeze at. He even had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-4 and scoring the only run he needed.

In other news, Pujols is now 5-for-5 this season with the bases loaded. A 2-run single last night brings his RBI total for the year to 70. At some point this season, he’s going to get an intentional (or all-but-intentional) walk with the bases loaded. It’s not like the guys hitting behind him strike fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers. The number 4 and 5 hitters (Ludwick and Ankiel) went 0-for-the-game last night. They’re hitting .235 and .238 respectively.

Yeah, maybe. Pretty decent outing by the Jays pitcher last night. Had the Reds pretty flummoxed for the first few innings. Fortunately, Votto is back now and is due for a few bigtime AB’s, and at least the Reds are going to throw a couple decent pitchers out there the next two games.

We did try to make it interesting towards the end of the game, though.

They’re still tied for the wild card. Girardi won’t lose his job unless the Yankees get to the point where they’re seriously threatened with not making the playoffs again.

Wonder what Billy Beane would do with a Yankee payroll?

Jesus, it’s 5-0 in the first frakking inning between the Reds and the Jays.

RickJay, you are welcome for letting the Reds come into your house and ignite your offense. I predict a long run of success for the Jays from here on out.

Arroyo-yo-yo…

Jeebus. The Reds are backsliding. We need to go on a run if we’re to stay within an arm’s reach of the Cards and Brew Crew.

John Smoltz’ first start as a non-Brave tonight. It was 20 years …

It also helps when random crazy errors let us steal one (finally…)

Could someone please explain the recent success of the Rockies and Giants to me? I haven’t been following them, but it seems like they just can’t stop winning as of late. So much for the runaway in the NL West this year.

Tigers finished the sweep of the Cubs this afternoon. Rodney is a joke. He came into the game in the 9th with a 2 run lead. He gave up a home run and a double. But we won ,so his perfect season of not blowing a game is intact. Twice he came in and walked the first 3 batters. And the Tigers are 10 over now. It feels like smoke and mirrors. Yet we are pulling away.

Braves fan here… what the hell? Why do we suddenly have offensive production, and give up 8 and 11 runs in two games… our pitching has been lights out all year, but we keep losing 3-1, 2-0, 4-2, etc… now we suddenly can get some hits and our pitching goes to shit. awesome.

I miss the the 90s/early 00s. I didn’t know how good I had it. No worries, we were gonna win the division every year regardless.

3 years without a postseason is killer… but 4 just pisses me off. Especially with the talent on this team.

Not like anybody out there watches the Pirates, but…

just wondering if there are any unbiased opinions on Andrew McCutchen

He’s been on a tear, hitting in his last 13 games (he has only played 20 in the majors).

People around here talk like he has a chance for Rookie of the Year.

Beginners luck?

McCutchen is the real deal and no mistake. He’s been a top-ranked prospect since being drafted, as well he should be since he was a first round pick. He’s a great contact hitter, runs well, good D, and he’s only 23 years old. He’s a little bit late to the party to win the Rookie of the Year Award - he’s only played 20 games - but I guess you never know.

I can understand why people were upset at the Nate McLouth trade but they had to make space for McCutchen. He was wasting his time at AAA. I’d much rather have McCutchen than McLouth right now. He’s a Grade A prospect all the way and he’s sure not embarassing himself in the majors so far.
