Baseball June 2009

If there are any Dodger fans, or LA locals, watching this thread, can i direct your attention to my Dodger Stadium question here.

Check this video out, guys. It’s a really neat bat trick!!

(No, I’m not spamming. I just don’t have any other friends who are into baseball, so I wanted to share it with the people in this thread!)

Well, it seems that he’s gone one further. According to MLB.com, he’s sitting out tonight and tomorrow with fatigue.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.

Tribe ahead 7-0 in the 5th.

Cubs win 8-7 in the 10th.

Fuck the goddamn motherfucking shithook Indians bullpen. Fuck them all to HELL!!! AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!

Strange line for the Marlins’ pitcher Shane West tonight. Struck out a career-high 7 batters, but gave up 10 hits and 5 runs, and lasted 4 2/3 innings.

First ever Civil Rights game in Cincinnati today. Many luminaries will be present: Bill Clinton, Hank Aaron, Mohammed Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar Robertson, Bill Cosby and many more.

Proud day for the Queen City.

Also, Johnny Cueto is pitching against the White Sox today, so we should see a performance.

Interesting. I haven’t heard about this. What’s the impetus? Is it the anniversary of something?

Here’s the explanation.

This year is the third civil rights game, but it’s the first one being played in a Major League Ballpark as part of the regular season. The last two were essentially exhibition games, held in Memphis. I guess the reasoning behind the location and the date (late March) of the earlier games was put them close to the time and place of Martin Luther King’s assassination.

Wow, the opening ceremonies of the Civil Rights game have been great. Muhammad Ali looks near death, though. The guy barely moved at all. Sad.

I hope someone else caught this. My eyes aren’t dry.

What is the reason for the delay at the Giants/Rangers game tonight? I don’t see any weather problems.

Woohoo!

After giving up a 3-run pinch-hit homer to Ryan Howard in the 7th, the Orioles score 3 in the top of the ninth to retake the lead and win the game 6-5.

Chris Carpenter.
(With apologies to RickJay for stealing his thing.)

Wow, the Rockies are 15-4 in June. Came back from 7-4 in the eighth to win 7-9.

They aren’t going to catch the Dodgers but they are solidly in wildcard contention now.

Playing against KC seems to spark some deep anger within Albert Pujols. He played high school ball in the KC area, but the Royals overlooked him in the draft. He now seems determined to make them pay and pay for that error. Before today he was hitting something like .385 against KC for his career. In today’s game, it’s the 5th inning as I type, and he’s 2-for-3 so far. He just nailed a grand slam. Yikes!

Albert’s had 4 bases-loaded opportunities this season, and that was his third grand slam.

I had mixed feelings about this one; i have Pujols in my fantasy team (awesome), but i also have Gil Meche.

…and Pujols cranks another (solo) HR in the 6th.

Woohoo! Redux.

The Orioles beat the Phillies 2-1, to sweep the series. Brian Roberts drove in the go-ahead runs today and last night. Jeremy Guthrie (finally!) had a great start for Baltimore, giving up just one run over 7 innings.

Philadelphia got a bit unlucky in the 8th. Rollins was called out on a tag by Wigginton running down the first base line, but replays clearly show that Wigginton’s glove never got anywhere near the runner.

Now, the umpire probably could have called Rollins out for running out of the baseline (he made a huge sidestep to avoid the tag), but the fact is that that the didn’t make that call. He said that Wigginton got the tag on, which was clearly wrong.

The next batter cracked a double to left-center, which probably would have plated Rollins had he been on first.

I can’t begin to express how glad I am that the Phillies are going back on the road. Perhaps they can use the travel time to remember how to play baseball, as they seem to have forgotten.

The Rockies are 16-1 since June 4th and are now 1 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the wild-card spot. They now head out on a tour of California against some pretty stout teams.

Well, at the rate my Brewers are losing, it won’t take too long for them to be overtaken.
