Baseball June 2009

They Jays still won, and the Rays and Jays still haven’t played each other. Maybe some time after the the All Star break… okay, checking the schedule, they have a couple of series right before the break. I still think it’s ridiculous to play several NL teams before you even get to face a team in your division, even though it probably works out in our favor.

The Tigers are in first place and they are not hitting. Ordonez is showing no power. Guillen has been on the DH so long I can barely remember him playing this year. We bring up a bunch of rookies and some show flashes. We have 3 starters. Then disaster. Relievers can be great or blow up. It is a white knuckle season already.
Rodney came into a 6 to 3 game in the 9th and walked 3 in a row. They tied it and we won it in the 10th.

I was watching last night’s Dodger game when the venerable Vin Scully, somehow, inexcusably concluded a sentence with “…and that’s why Troncoso hasn’t given up a home run all year.” I texted a friend with, “Did Vin just jinx us?” Sure enough.

I’m happy to escape with a victory over the lowly A’s last night.

At the rate things are going, by the time the Blue Jays play the Rays, their starting rotation will be Vernon Wells (who can’t possibly pitch worse than he hits), Luis Leal, Jerry Howarth, K-Os and the dark-haired chick who was on both “Corner Gas” and “Robson Arms.” And they’ll all get hurt too.

For a while it looked like Halladay was just going to remain day-to-day, but MLB reports that he’s just gone on the DL, and is eligible to be activated on June 28. That’s at least two, and possibly three starts he’ll miss.

The Padres are without Jake Peavy until at least early July, and more likely August or September. I’ll bet the White Sox are now counting their blessings that Peavy vetoed a trade a few weeks ago. San Diego’s #2 starter Chris Young is also out for at least his next start with a shoulder problem, and might end up on the DL.

Sidney Ponson might be available

Of course, the Jays organization will now trot out the “Wahhhh, injuries” excuse for why the team doesn’t win.

But this will be… I dunno, the fifth, sixth year in a row they’ve used that excuse?

At some point, when does someone become accountable for either the lack of appropriate training or the assemblage of fragile ballplayers?

At least you’re not an Oakland A’s fan. They’ve had at least 10 players on the DL this year and we’re not even at the All Star break. While those who are healthy (Giambi/Holliday) have underperformed, they’ve had way too many injuries. Seriously, I’d fire the trainer and their strength/conditioning coaches.

The Yankees just lost against the Nationals! Knowing fully that this may come back to bite me in the ass next week when the Sox get their turn against theNats, let me still just say, with all possible Nelson Muntzosity: HA HA!

(LET’S GO NATINALS!)

Slightly off topic, but i just watched a really good game in the College World Series between Arkansas and Virginia.

Arkansas were down 3-1 in the ninth, with 2 out and no-one on. They got a single and then a two-run homer to tie it up, and then went on to win 4-3 in 12 innings. Arkansas reliever Keuchel had an amazing game, pitching more than 60 pitches in relief and getting the win.

Virginia, though, just killed themselves with bad base-running. Without mistakes on the bases, they would have won without the need for extra innings, and then two pieces of poor running by a single runner in the 10th inning cost them the winning run.

Anyone have MLB At-Bat for the iPhone? I was watching a baseball game last night, on my cellphone. The future is now folks - get in line for your jetpacks.

I sat in the Diamond Club seats today ($235 per ticket) and watched the Reds get thoroughly trounced by the fucking Braves. Nice show on offense, Reds. ZERO runs. Great job.

Excuse me while I go back to the buffet and eat some more crab-laced pasta salad in disgust while tossing back my free Sapphire and tonics.

(My rich bosses season tickets…it was better than working today, but still…)

The Colorado Rockies have just gone 13 for 14 against a bunch of good teams, with eight of the games on the road.

They are now at .500 for the season.

So they got that going for them.

The Indians were doing pretty good (for us this season, at least) then the last 3 games against Milwaukee our pitching took another turn for the worse.

It’s like watching your dog dying from cancer, seeing it improve, then waking up one day to find it passed out in a puddle of bloody vomit.

So Cleveland. sigh

Yanks lost 2 of 3 to the Nationals, at home yet. A-Rod isn’t their only problem, but he should not be hitting cleanup while he woprks his way back into form. He’s practically a liability at this point. Well, at least his contact is manageable…

That is the Natinals, you should at least respect their chosen spelling.

But yes, I agree, A-Rod should step down to a lower spot for a while and let Cano and or Posada bat 4th.

Jim, I get to quite a few Charlotte Knights games (Chicago White Sox AAA team, including ex-Yankee Andy Phillips, who’s tearing up the league and should be on a big-league squad, but I digress) and 2 weeks ago I saw the Scranton Yanks play. Austin Jackson looks like the real deal. His power numbers aren’t there yet, but man can he cover some ground. (Reggie Jackson was traveling with them and was his typical, surly self, but still, it’s Reggie.)

Tigers are in first and getting panicky. They are sitting Ordonez on a semi permanent basis. He is not hitting with any power.
They are putting Willis back on the DL for mental problems and are pitching a rookie in his place. For the second time this week Rodney their reliever came in the 9th and walked the first 3 batters. Guillen is on the DL and may never come back. The Tigers can not score runs.
They are in first, go figure.

Good to hear. I have been following him and the young catcher Montoya through stats and boxscores but that is far from really seeing them play. Montoya made it to AA already. Jackson I hope is our future CF or RF. How is his arm?

In the game I saw, I don’t think he had the chance to show off his arm, so I’m not sure about that.
