Storms again in Dallas? Ugh. The Dodgers/Rangers will have a hard time making this game up unless they end up with a double header tomorrow.
OK, i’ll shut up. Looks like the Dodgers/Rangers will be able to play.
Rockies just won their 10th in a row and they’re still under .500.
Yankees are doing a blowout of the Mets 13-0. I keep expecting the Phillies to open up a huge lead in the NL East, but the Mets are still holding their own. Phillies are tied with Boston right now, although Boston is playing with quite a few starters sitting on the bench. Varitek, Drew, Ortiz, and Pedroia are all on the bench although I’m sure they’ll be used as pinch hitters.
Cardinals won yesterday, thanks to two solo home runs by Albert Pujols. I’m just glad the opposing teams haven’t thought of the “Don’t pitch to Albert” winning strategy yet.
Well, Pujols has been in a rare slump lately.
A perfect Trevor Hoffman. It was good while it lasted.
But if it takes 19 games to give up ONE earned run. I’ll take that any day.
Phils did so so against the Sox this weekend. I watched replays of the foul ball that Dobbs hit and I agree that it was close, but I don’t understand why it couldn’t be reviewed. How does that even work? If the umpire says he is sure they refuse to review? That seemed like a text book example of a ball that should have been reviewed. If they had and still called it foul - that game would be a bit less galling.
Today’s game was nice. Good to see the lineup come back and get some scrappy hits to take over the game. Also, nice to see Happ not pitch well, but still keep his composure to give the innings that the bullpen needed. It wasn’t his greatest outing - but he stayed in there.
Wow. How bad must the Reds be if the Royals could sweep them without either Gil Meche or Zack Grienke?
Of course, I’d love to be convinced that this weekend means the Royals have gotten their collective heads out of their asses, but it will take at least a month of decent play for me to have any hope again…
15 - 0. Ouch.
N Schierholtz hit an inside-the-park home run to deep right center, P Sandoval and R Aurilia scored.
You can see a replay at ESPN or MLB.com.
The Red Sox need to find room in the rotation for yet another top pitcher, since none of the current bunch have followed the plan by getting injured. Oh dear, whatever shall they do? Matsuzaka to the bullpen, or maybe a phantom injury so he can do some proper conditioning? And why would they want to trade Penny?
They might have to send their 100-mph rookie back down just because he has options. And poor Buchholz and Bowden are going to have to wait until September at the earliest.
Problems, problems, problems …
We’re pretty bad right now, and gave up some bad errors (thanks Hairston!) in that series. Our pitching is hitting a dead arm phase and it isn’t helping that our best bats are absent or hurt. Our offense sucks. We need Joey Votto back in a big way. Ditto Edinson Volquez, our lone allstar from last year.
Still, despite the 2-4 road trip, we’re only 2.5 games back in the central division. This time last year and the year before we were 12.5 games back. The biggest difference has been pitching.
So what kind of trade rumors are flying around about your teams right now? And if you’re the Dodgers, would you do anything right now to try to improve yourself?
I look at the standings and can’t help but wonder if Derek Lowe is missing LA right now. I’m sure Brad Penny and Takashi Saito are pleased with their moves to Boston, though.
Last rumor I saw was that the Cards would… drumroll… do absolutely nothing. I know they’re trying to build from within and stick to a budget and all, but can’t they throw caution and money to the wind and snag some big star just for the hell of it? It’s such a rush imaging the numbers the new guy will put up for the hometown nine, right up to the moment he gets injured/sucky/arrested.
'Course they need to start stockpiling cash to keep Pujols in 2011, so maybe it’s best if they don’t dip into the piggy bank. I’ve got about $50 in my wallet. Maybe I’ll just send that to the team.
I heard Brandon Webb this morning, but i think that was just ESPN talk. He’s been hurt all year, so the D-backs would be selling low. A team as young as the D-backs doesn’t need more prospects. Plus, the D-backs don’t have a glaring need at any one particular position. We’ve just got a lot of young players going throw a lot of growing pains this year.
Hmm, maybe they could get Milton Bradley from the Cubs…
I really don’t think Lou Pinella is going to let Bradley get out of Chicago alive.
Couple of nice complete-game shutouts pitched today. Gil Meche did it to Arizona, and i just watched Felix Hernandez take care of the Padres with a 2-hit effort. San Diego suffered a similar fate at the hands of Jered Weaver on Sunday, and haven’t scored in their last 21+ innings.
The Orioles continue to suck, despite some recent sign that their bats have woken up from a two-week slumber. They were killed by poor fielding today, with Brian Roberts fumbling an easy grounder at second, and then Aubrey Huff dropping an over-the-shoulder pop-up which allowed two runs to score. It was a pretty hard play for Huff, and i thought that Roberts should have called him off and made the catch.
One bright spot for the Orioles is the recent form of starting pitcher Brad Bergeson. He’s been excellent recently.
The Blue Jays went into yesterday’s game with Scott Downs, a reliever, as their #1 starting pitcher.
Predictably, he got injured last night.
Edit: I’m an idiot; Downs is the closer. Brian Tallet is the former reliever turned staff ace, but Downs is the one who got injured.
