Everyone knows about DiMaggio’s hitting streak, but being one who values a player’s total contribution I wonder who has the longest streak for getting on base in consecutive games. A walk is as good as a single in my book…
At first I figured a likely candidate would be Ted Williams, but then got to wondering if Ruth or Bonds might have the title from all the intentional walks they received.
This came up a few years ago when Derek Jeter had an On Base Streak in the 50s. I do not recall who the all time streak belongs to, but this might assist someone googling for it.
The streak itself is not treasured in any significant way. It is more of a Blue Moon Stat. Yes, it is interesting, but not a major record.
I have a vague memory Mike Schmidt might be the holder of this record.
The record is believe to belong to Ted Williams, who reached base safely in 84 straight games during the 1949 season.
I say I believe that’s the record because day-by-day statistics are not complete and/or accurate before 1960 (though teams of researchers, including yours truly, have been working on it).
Orlando Cabrera of the Angels had a 63 game streak that ended in early July of this season. It’s the longest since 1960, and as far as we know second only to Williams in 1949.
