Okay, I have been posting lately about my cat Oliver because he has been ill. He seems to be okay now (except for the need for a urine sample) and I am in the process of switching over his food to something else to see if that helps him out.
Now Joey, my other cat, has developed a much different problem. I have 2 litter boxes in the house. Up until about 2 days ago both of them were used regularly. When I went to change out the litter two days ago I found that the litter box in the living room was over full and the litter box in the bedroom hadn’t been touched. I cleaned out both boxes and changed the litter. Yesterday I noticed the same thing, they are both using only 1 litter box. Today I was sitting here applying for jobs when Joey walked up and peed on the table! I set him on the floor and while I was cleaning up that mess he went and peed in the center of my bed! He is now locked in the bathroom with the litter box neither cat will touch and my bed is covered with Urine Gone. Tomorrow on my way home from work I will get a new litter box and fresh, clean litter to replace the one they won’t use but until then I have no idea what to do.
Is Joey just pissed off at me because Oliver has been sick and getting extra attention? Is he pissed off that I have a boyfriend now and I spent the night away from home on Saturday? Is he trying to tell me he is sick? I don’t want to make him live out his life locked into a small, tiled space but I cannot have everything I own covered in cat piss either. Hopefully he is just upset with the box for some reason and I can replace it tomorrow and all will be well, but if that doesn’t work how the hell am I supposed to be able to figure out what is wrong with him?
Totally anecdotal, but I had a cat once that would do that. Fiona was the smartest cat evar. She used to get UTI’s pretty regularly, and would alert me to her discomfort by waiting for me to lay down in bed, climbing up on me and letting fly. Once we figured out that’s what was going on, all was well. I’d start her on amoxicillin and she’d stop immediately.
It could be that simple. shrug Sounds like another vet trip is in your future!
Could a urinary tract infection wait until tomorrow after work or do I need to take him to the emergency vet now? He has peed about 7 times in the last hour so I am thinking it is a UTI but the emergency vet is 3 times the cost of the normal vet so if it can wait that would be best, but his being healthy is the most important thing.
You know, I am just going to take him to the emergency vet. I had a UTI not long ago that made me wish for death and I would hate to think he has something similar. Damned expensive cat problems!
Oh dear. I’m sorry it took me this long to come back to this thread. I doubt I would have advised you against going right now, so I’m just going to say that I’m really sorry you have to do that. Please report back and let us know how Joey is doing and if the vet had anything worthwhile to say.
The vet says that it is not a UTI, but an inflammatory urinary something-or-other. $400 worth of cabfare and vet fees and Joey is feeling a bit better and has a couple of prescriptions. I have been advised to keep and eye on him to make sure he doesn’t have any kind of urinary blockage and that if I notice anything like that I need to take him to the vet right away.
Now my next question is the most effective way to get the cat piss smell out of my mattress.
Nature’s Miracle. Saturate every affected surface. and by “saturate” I mean, for the mattress, pour a solid 8oz cup over the spot, don’t just wet the surface.
But, a new mattress may well be necessary if alot went through the sheets & mattress pad.
