Bat in the basement

I was in my little section of my apartment’s basement doing laundry earlier tonight when all of a sudden, there was a great rushing of wings and something large and black flew by my head. It relocated from one side of the little basement to the other. I think it is a bat that is living in the rafters.

Now, I like bats very much and do not have any fears that this one is going to go for my throat…but is it safe to be alone in a fairly small area with it? He, or she, does not like it when I flip on the light. I wonder if there is a chance it will become disoriented and crash into something, such as myself.

I am also not certain about telling the landlords about the bat. If it is just one bat, and we keep our distance, I don’t mind it. I know it is illegal to kill them, but lots of people still do. I would be sad if this one met an unhappy fate because I “ratted it out.” Does anybody know what the changes are of just having one bat, as opposed to a whole collection living in the basement?

Thanks!

I don’t know if one bat = lots of bats. Although I’d think if there were more than one you’d have disturbed all of them. I do know that they find their way in flight by sonar, so I’d say the chances of your getting batted about (sorry!) are slim.

Perhaps the bat will get used to the light going on. Or perhaps it’s merely dropped in for an overnight stay, and will be gone tomorrow night.

I’d keep mum, since you like bats. They’re normally harmless, useful critters. You might inquire discreetly whether rabies is endemic in your area, and if so, what animals are the common carriers.

And no, if it’s rabid you may not sic it on me. Hmph! :stuck_out_tongue:

Wraiths on wings!

Wraiths on wings!

Must people drag LOTR into everything???

And I haven’t even seen ROTK yet. I feel so out of it.

Nonsense, NCB!! Bats are our friends. Even when we don’t have a belfry to offer them.
