Today is bathroom cleaning day (yay  ), but I’m having trouble getting the tub clean with the Scrubbing Bubbles cleaner. I know it’s bad news to mix ammonia and chlorine, and the SB has ammonia, according to the can. I’ve pretty much scrubbed up the SB out of the tub. Is it safe to use bleach on it now? Or am I likely to end up collapsed dead over the side of the tub by the time supervenusfreak gets home from work?
Rinse the ammonia down with at least a couple of gallons of water and it should be ok. The water seal should protect you.
What are you trying to clean out of the tub? For soap scum, the best thing I’ve found is called the Works. It also is good for hard water stains. I have very hard water and have been able to cut down on the soap deposits by switching to a liquid soap (I buy those huge refill jugs of hand soap) and as a result, I don’t have to use as much cleaner.
I’ve seldom asked anything of Comet that it couldn’t accomplish. And it’s cheap.
I had forgotten that we had Ajax up there. The tub’s about as clean as it’s getting right now.
Always happy to help!
You can also (for future reference at least) target specific cleaning agents at specific cleaning tasks. For blue and green and brown stains that appear around areas where water consistently evaporates, like where the faucet drips, and crusty white buildup in places like the shower head, you can use an acid like hydrochloric acid (sold in weak but perfectly useable form in hardware stores as muriatic acid). You might want gloves and a fan for this job, and don’t send large quantities of it down the drain without plenty of dilution water or tomorrow will be basement cleaning day). For things with protein in them, you want enzymes. For grease you want either organic solvents like xylene (“Goof Off”) or aggressive surfactants like the new citrus-related turpene based cleaners. I am not sure what to suggest for soap scum, especially after other recommendations, but if pressed I’d guess you want alkalis, maybe lye, with all the approrpiate safeguards.

Yeah, that was…clunky. Like “subtle fail”.
