I have neither. My tub does not seem to be slippery.
Wow . . . that’s . . . Man, you REALLY hate bath mats!
Reminds self to remove all mats from showers if Shoshana ever comes over or might find her hanging from shower rod.
I kind of agree with Soshana! I don’t wish I were dead, really, but stepping on a bath mat or those flowers just turn my stomach! I can’t stand the feel of them underfoot, and even just moving it out of the way at my father in law’s place gives me the shivers - I can barely convince myself to grab onto a corner and lift it! And it isn’t because it’s dirty or anything (he’s quite good about keeping the mat and tub clean) but for some reason it just bothers me. I can’t explain why.
Naked tub in our apartment!
Stickers are useless, & often fall off.
Bath mats need replacing, but work.
The stickers are horrible & I hate them.
Update! I got it clean! I tried old-fashioned Octagon bar soap today, and it worked! I wet the tub, shaved off some soap with the vegetable peeler, worked up a nice lather with a Scotch-brite sponge, and left it for ten minutes or so. A little more scrubbing with the Scotch-brite, and now it’s snowy white! Yee haw!
Excellent use of hyperbole. A+

I have a bathmat in MayBoy’s tub (the only tub with a shower in the house). He doesn’t remember to pick it up after he showers, so scrubbing the tub is, well, an experience, as many of you know. But he’s also still in his awkward, gangly phase. I will deal with scrubbing the tub right now. MayGirl has a shower stall with a textured floor in her bathroom, and our bath has a shower stall and separate soaking tub.
I can’t imagine having the stickers in the tub, though. My grandmother had them, and we kids used to spend our bath time trying to peel them up.
The mat. If the sticker get moldy, you’re stuck with them. You can replace a mat (and lift it off the tub when you’re not using it, so it doesn’t get moldy).
We used stickers many years ago, when they came in those ubiquitous “flower power” daisy shapes. They didn’t so much peel up as they shifted position and left gummy outlines of where they started out. Eventually we scraped them off and it took forever to get the gummy outlines off.
The rubber mats don’t look inviting.
Those flower stickers from 2006 are probably peeling up by now. They, and this thread, have been down for 9 years now.
We own (ok, the bank owns) a beautiful home with quite an interesting bathroom. It’s the only bathroom so everyone who comes over uses it. There is a separate walk in shower, so the tub has no curtain. The previous owner put these huge fish shaped stickers all over the tub, even up the back – wait, who the hell slips on the sides of the tub? – so everyone who sees my silver bathroom also sees ugly blue fish decals and wonders why I would put them on the walls of the tub. Classy. :smack:
Does anyone know a good way to remove them after 10+ years of stickage?
Own both my home and the rubber mat I stand on in the shower.
Try Goo Gone.
I wish I could say I have little non-slip duckies with umbrellas, because that’s what Sheldon Cooper has (even though ducks have no need for umbrellas, and have no means of holding them). They would have saved Penny from slipping and dislocating her shoulder, necessitating Sheldon to dress her (mistaking a breast for an arm) and driving her to the ER (though he doesn’t know how to drive).
But in reality (in the house I own) I have a suction mat.
Some posts above have mentioned that bath mats can slip right out from under your feet, like a cheap throw rug. That happens when they are cheap bath mats.
I have seen cheap mats that do this. They are thinner and more flexible than the better-quality mats. I learned to hang onto a grab-bar when entering and exiting showers with mats like that. I personally knew of a case of an old lady who really did slip and fall on one of those things.
The better quality mats are thicker and don’t flex so easily, which seems to prevent that. Yes, of course they cost more. Deal with it. Bath mats are one of those household items for which I would insist on a quality Brand Name. I suggest Rubbermaid.
And also as someone posted above: Rinse off the mat, top and bottom, after each shower, and hang it up to dry. That keeps it from getting grungy.
Ducks with umbrellas.
That’s what Sheldon Cooper recommends.
Ours used to have the flower stickers, but they were pretty nasty and we took them off. Now it’s just bare. The very definition of living on the edge.
Our shower is fiberglass and the floor is textured, so we don’t need anything on it. Plus we have a big grab bar which doubles as a place to hang washcloths. The tub in our guest bathroom is porcelain-coated, but the floor has some sort of rough finish so it’s not slippery, plus there’s a grab bar in there also.
When we were kids, my mom always stuck thingies in the tub, and it didn’t take long before they started peeling up and looking crappy. I don’t think I ever bought any kind of adhesive thingies for any place I’ve lived. I have had mats a few times, but I really don’t like them.
Textured finish which has largely worn off. Which means stickers won’t stick for long. Even the heavy-duty stair-tread tape releases its grip after a couple weeks, especially with heavyweight showerers who evidently pivot on the balls of their feet as they turn in the tub.
Mats get nasty, and you can’t tell until after purchase whether they’re going to be the good stiff kind or the flexible useless kind - price doesn’t seem to be an indicator. I stick the mat on the tub wall after use, but no one else does. And after using hair conditioner, slime sticks to the mat and still needs to be washed off periodically, which means by me.
I’d be perfectly content to stick with stickers if I could get them to stay stuck. No amount of prep seems to make a difference - rubbing alcohol, etc.
Vinyl “pebble” bath mat (clear).
I clean it when I clean the tub, and I throw it in the washer with a little bit of bleach every few weeks. There’s no goo on it. There’s no mold under it. ETA: I also take it off the bottom of the tub and let it dry after use.
I do live in a low-humidity area. YMMV in a more tropical location.
