Batman: Arkham Asylum demo

It’s on the PSN, Xbox Live and the BAA official site now. Anybody play it yet?

I haven’t completed it yet, but I’m not as impressed as I thouht I would be. The controls feel a little stiff and kind of unBatman-like. Batman is supposed to be smooth and quick. This Batman moves like a Resident Evil character and there’s no grace to him. And he’s completely helpless against characters with guns.

But the mood is pure Batman, so I’m hoping the demo improves as I get further into it. Otherwise, Arkham Asylum may have gone from sure buy to a rental.

I tried it in a store while I was waiting for some work on my car to be done and you’ve got all my complaints down. I wasn’t impressed with the controls; it seemed to be trying to split the difference between a fast paced beat-em-up and something more tactical and not succeeding at either.

I found it pretty good - in fact I would’ve highlighted the controls as impressive and fluid-seeming, if anything. Maybe i’m just easily impressed. Certainly that you have Conroy and Hamill doing the voicework does a lot for the atmosphere (Oracle’s and Harley Quinn seem reasonable, but Gordon’s voice really doesn’t seem to work at all, though).

Just downloaded and played it through… and I’m of a similar mindset about the controls. The fight scenes are fantastic, and amazingly fun to watch even if you’re mostly button-mashing, but it feels too ‘blocky’ to be a great stealth game a la Manhunter, and is a bit too slow to be a good beat 'em up.

This Batman nerd’s waiting for it to drop to $30.

Are the graphics as good in motion as they are in the pictures?

If they were good enough for four years of Batman: the Animated Series, they’re good enough for this game, IMO.

There is no way the Commissioner Gordon in the game is voiced by the same Commissioner Gordon that was on Batman: The Animated Series.

And I found proof. I also agree with Revenant Threshold, Harley Quinn in the game is not as good as she was in the show. Maybe it’s just the short snippet we’ve heard so far, but it sounds off. Maybe it’s the new goth girl costume conflicting with how the character originally looked.

If the IMDB was wrong about Gordon maybe it is also wrong about Harley Quinn. In any case, I agree that Gordon didn’t sound good. I didn’t think Quinn sounded nearly as good as the show. Perhaps, as Justin said, it’s a difference in characterization. Maybe as the game wears on it will grow on me.

I really enjoyed the demo. I loved being able to hang from a gargoyle swoop down and take care of some thugs. I was on the fence about the game, but now I am deeply considering pre ordering it. I held off on Infamous and Ghostbusters and never got them. I might have to spend that money on this game.

I think they got the mood and feel of Batman down really well. The ads imply that there will be a detective/puzzle solving aspect to the game. I hope this is so. They didn’t show much of it in the demo, but the demo was pretty short. I liked what the demo showed both in gameplay and feel - the addition of more bat gadgets and sleuthing would make the game fantastic.

I was disappointed by how short the demo was. Which, hopefully will not extend to the length of the game. When Justin_Bailey said he didn’t complete it I expected it to be really long, as he seems like much more of a gamer than me. I guess he was just busy that day.

Looking forward to this one. Thanks for the heads up that the demo was out there.

Harley Quinn is definitely the same voice actor, Arleen Sorkin. Harley Quinn puts on a peep show in new Batman: Arkham Asylum trailer @ Gaming Target

As for why I didn’t complete it at first, I grabbed it Thursday night around 1 AM and only played for a little bit before I went to bed. Then I didn’t get back to it until Friday night. The guys in the last room stumped me until then.

Okay, just finished playing the demo and I have to say I was very impressed. I’m a huge fan of the Dark Knight and this seemed better than I’d dared hope.

First the few negatives. The length of the demo…

It is very short, but I got what they were going for. We got a taste of the “free flow” combat, which I liked, (more on that in a minute), and the stealth combat, along with a short segment where we’re supposed to utilize the “detective mode”, (finding the grating after taking out Zsasz). That seems to cover the three main modes of gameplay and I thought it did so very well.

And the voice acting for Gordon. It’s obviously not Bob Hastings and I thought the voice they chose had a little too much “tough cop”, and not enough “replacement father figure”. For Gordon it’s important to balance the two.

And the positives, of which there were many…

First of all the atmosphere seems to be nearly perfect. It nails the Batman mythos spot on, with darkness and grittiness, combined with just a pinch of over the top superheroics. Of course the inclusion of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill helps this a great deal and I thought the voice acting was great with the exception of Gordon. Even Harley sounds perfect to me as it sounds just like Arleen Sorkin, though I’m not sure if it is, in fact, her or not. (It sure sounds like it though…)

About the combat, I understand where people are coming from about the controls feeling “off”, but this just seems right to me. Batman is not an agile character, he’s fast and brutal and I thought the controls reflected this more than adequately. I didn’t need to actually have Batman facing in particular directions to fight his enemies, I simply needed to be aware of where they were they were at relatively speaking. A quick strike was a straight punch or kick if they were in front, and back fist or a back kick if they were behind. It feels like context sensitive animations will be a big part of the combat in the game, along with timing “takedowns” and counters.

The stealth combat later on was phenomenal, (when you have to take out the 5 or 6 armed thugs), and very intuitive. Batman should be pretty much helpless against an enemy with an assault rifle. They have to be dealt with quickly, or from an advantageous position. The first time I did that section I let the first thug go and grappled up on one of the gargoyles. Trying to glide kick five enemies got me into trouble real quick. The second time I tried it I took out the first thug with a “stealth takedown” before he reached the staircase, (right after the Joker finished his speech), and grappled the nearest gargoyle again. From there I hung down from the perch and used an “inverted takedown” to remove the second thug. After that the other three were spaced far enough apart to glide kick and remove them from the room before their friends could respond. It felt very tactical to me personally.

The presentation was incredible. Cubsfan asked about the graphics and, frankly, I thought they were some of the best I’ve seen this console generation outside of a tech demo. Detailed and high resolution, with no slowdown. But it isn’t just the technical side of things, the art design and music were really good to. It’s like they’ve cherry picked the best parts of the comics, the animated series and the Nolan movies and combined them into one package.

I know I’m gushing, but it really feels we may be getting the definitive Batman game at long last. For hardcore Batman fans, like myself, this seems to be a no brainer. For general gamers this merits a rental at least. I think the developers might have something very special here, and I know I was really trying to temper my expectations for a long time. The demo has laid a lot of my fears to rest. The final version might still be a disappointingly short game, but that seems to a very minor criticism at this point.

In short, I liked it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I didn’t realise Harley Quinn had the same voice actress - probably i’m just recalling the series wrongly. It just sounded like someone doing a reasonable impression to me. Ah well.

So I saw the first reviews are in for the actual game and they are extremely positive pretty much across the board. I decided to download the demo to try it out and though it was really good. I thought the combat was actually very fun and I really liked the detective mode with the stealth kills. Very fun. Looking forward to trading some games next week to get this one.

Oh, the graphics and character design are outstanding as is the sound. The lip syncing blows though. Otherwise I’m stoked!

Played this on Thursday. Overall I’d give it a B. The controls were solid if a bit button mashy. They didn’t detract from the game though, and felt mostly fluid. The graphics were good. A bit atmosphere heavy but overall batmanny. The vocals were good. Combat was fun. I appreciated moving fluidly from one target to the next in an entirely Batman style, enabling me to handle three opponents all at once. I liked that against a thug with a gun I was going to get my arse handed to me.

What knocked it down to a B? Camera controls and angles. Might just have been me but it seemed a bit close behind and tended to settle at odd angles. If the combat hadn’t been as forgiving as it was in hand to hand, I’d have gotten beat down by foes I couldn’t see. The batarang also seemed kind of tacked on.

Still, a solid if brief demo. I’ll have to check the reviews but it looks as if worth a trade if not an outright buy.

Just got the actual game today. It is VERY good. The presentation is probably the best I’ve seen this year and the characters look spot on (except for maybe Batmans HUGE arms). The Joker is 100% perfect, same for the rest.

I’ll report back later when I get further through the game.

I just downloaded this demo for PC…the controls aren’t re-mappable? I hope this is only a limitation on the demo because I find wasd too awkward to play (I’m left handed and have a strong preference to play with the num keys).

Does anyone know if retail package lets you re-map?

I haven’t played it yet, but like the look of the ads and reviews I’ve seen.

The controls are like in Assassin’s Creed - where you just have a few fight buttons that do different things based on the situation?

I’m sorry, what?

I just played the PC demo and my one complaint is when I wasn’t running, the camera was in a very bad spot. Sort of behind Batman’s right shoulder, giving a very bad view of what is in front of Batman. If I try to move the camera to see what’s in front of him better, it makes Batman walk to the right. At least when you’re running the camera is right behind you and it’s ok, but when walking, you can’t see anything in front of you and I found no way to zoom the camera out (but that might just be in the demo.)

But I can tell this wasn’t really meant to be played on a PC, since the mere act of clicking the mouse buttons to do attacks will cause the camera to move too much and lead to you not knowing what’s going on.

Oh well, I’ve been meaning to buy a 360 for a while now, and with the new price break on Friday…

I was simply addressing some of the previous posters concerns about the controls feeling slow and “blocky”. (Which I interpreted to mean imprecise.) It’s true that the game moves more slowly than a pure action game would, and the stealth elements are perhaps more forgiving than they would be in a pure stealth game, but they’ve done a tremendous job at striking a balance between the two.

In the hand to hand combat situations Batman does move a tad slower than you might want. But I think this is offset by two factors. First is that the controls are very responsive. I’ve been playing the full game for a couple of days now and not once have I felt myself fumbling with the combat system. Everytime I’ve been killed I always knew exactly what I did wrong. (Usually striking when I should have countered, or vice versa.) The other is that all the combat inputs are context sensitive. You can counter any thug from any direction regardless of which way you’re actually facing. Strikes work in much the same way, simply push the stick in the direction you want to attack and Batman strikes and turns in that direction automatically. It actually makes combat a little too easy, at least until you run into thugs with knives and stun batons, which are unblockable.

Is this what you were referring to?

This game has the most fluid combat animations of any game in history. My son loves watching batman fuck a group of bad guys up.

The graphics are the best this year too. Just awesome.

I could do without all the airduct crawling though.
