Batman: Arkham Origins

Xbox version got an update about a week ago, and I haven’t had any freezes or corrupted saves since then. Still doing the save game backup shuffle though.

I’m still working through the story, and trying to finish all the challenges at the same time. One thing I noticed is that combat in the challenge mode seems different than the game/story mode. Specifically, in the challenge mode, even on the harder challenges, it’s pretty easy to work up to a huge combo without getting hit. But in the story mode, guys will “sneak up” on you and hit you with about .1 sec warning, or start their swing while you’re in one of the “uninterruptible” combos, but the hit comes in immediately after the combo ends. Not a big deal, except that a few of the dark knight challenges require big combos & no hits, and were pretty difficult to get.

Yeah I noticed that too. The challenge combat plays more like Arkham City’s, the story combat is a lot tougher.

I’m still working my way through it. I think I’m around 40% through the story, but I’ve been slowing down.

I originally wasn’t as annoyed at the lack of innovation as a lot of other folks, but now it’s starting to get to me. When it first arrived, I must have averaged three hours a day, but now I put in an hour every two or three days. The story isn’t terribly compelling and the gameplay doesn’t bring enough new stuff to the table to hold my interest for long. I preordered it because I had a serious itch for more Arkham gameplay, but now I kind of wish I’d just played a few challenge maps from the first two games and waited for Origins to go on sale. Ah well.

One thing that disappoints me a bit about the new voice actor for the Joker is that he’s not doing a unique spin on the character. He’s just doing a second rate job of “Mark Hamill as the Joker.” Don’t get me wrong, he’s doing a passable impersonation of Mark Hamill’s Joker, but it’s just that: an impersonation.

ETA: The Joker’s voice acting job is probably not the actor’s fault, but more likely pressure from the developer or publisher to give players what they’re expecting, rather than take a risk with something new.

Well, to be fair, it’s also supposed to be a prequel leading to Mark Hamill as the Joker. He’s fundamentally playing Young MHATJ, in a story about how a guy becomes MHATJ. So it’s not like the new guy would have had complete creative freedom with the role even without any pressure from the suits.
It bothered me a bit a first too, I’ll be honest, but he grew on me. I still can’t get over the new voice of soon-to-be-Commish Gordon, however.

I’m refusing to push through on the main story until I pick up all of Enigma’s data.

I probably won’t finish the game until 2015…

Uh…I’m pretty sure you can’t get all of the Enigma stuff until the post-game. The informant on the bridge certainly doesn’t show up until then.

God damn it!

Well, better to know now, than to really piss yourself off trying to get to the one, say, near the radio tower in the NW, that is actually underground in the sewer in a late-game story mission…like I did.

Fair enough. I hadn’t thought about it that way. Cheerfully withdrawn.

There are also data packs inside the bridge, but going inside the bridge triggers the endgame, locking you out of the city until you’re done.

Just in case you hadn’t heard too - there’s a few choke points on the Worst Nightmare challenge track, where if you don’t finish the current goal in a certain predator room, there’s no way to finish the entire track by the end of the story, since the predator rooms don’t repopulate when the story is completed. You have to play NG+ to continue proceeding, though it keeps the ones you’ve already done.
