I just installed it for the PS3 yesterday and am having a lot of fun. It’s my first time to play an on-line game (I’ve always been meaning to get around to it but just haven’t). I like the fact that you can pick up the controller and shoot around for a ten or twenty-minute game, then put it down and go do something else. This is a fun game but it’s not going to take over my life, like an MMPORG.
I also don’t have a headset yet, but will pick one up soon (maybe tonight after work) and I’m sure I’ll like the game a lot better once I can hear my teams tactical plans and co-operate with them.
My only complaint is that for a color-blind guy, telling the difference between friend and foe is really difficult when they are in the distance. Each player has a small triangle above them either in red or in blue to indicate enemy and friend respectively, but damn if I can tell the difference. Which reminds me, is it possible to injure a team member with friendly fire? Or do you lose points for doing so? I hope not, because I think I’ve been taking pot shots at good guys quite a bit (by accident).
One final question, sometimes I look at my tactical map and see no enemies around me (red dots on the map), but then all of a sudden a guy pops out of the bush and stabs me in the ribs with a bayonette - is that normal?
I think it’s a pretty decent little game. They turned off all friendly damage so don’t worry about friendly fire.
The tactical map doesn’t show all people on the map only people that you or friendlies have located. In my experience they don’t show up until they have been shot at.
I don’t know battlefield 2, so I can’t comment. There’s probably lots of reviews around comparing the two.
The game is available for download online as the playstation store - for around 15 dollars (at least where I am - probably the same in the US). There’s only a small selection of maps, but the game itself has excellent visuals and I haven’t found it to be laggy or buggy at all.
I’d suggest 1942 + expansions for the PC. The graphics are gonna suck by today’s standards and I’m not sure if you can still find players these days, but those games were classic in their time. You should know, having played BF2. What they’ve done to the franchise on consoles is sheer… blasphemy.
1943 dumbs down the game for the PS3. There are only 3 classes, 3 maps, and 4 vehicles. And you can’t move the carrier around and lag the whole server (awwww), one of the most fun, charming, and annoying aspects of '42. There aren’t bombers anymore, and no two-man planes. And there’s no Desert Combat. But then again, there’s already Battlefield: Modern Combat… which is also dumbed down compared to Battlefield 2.
Meh. Ok, now let’s switch off anti-console-ranting mode:
Ignoring its much-superior PC predecessors, 1943’s not too bad as a budget PS3 title. Pretty damned fun, actually. There’s nothing spectacular or unique about it… it’s Just Another Team-Based Shooter… but, well, I played the demo for a while and certainly wouldn’t mind playing it a bit longer. Might even purchase it if I get really bored one night. It doesn’t stand up to other modern shooters, IMO, but at $15 it doesn’t really have to.
I’m getting (a little) better at this game. A few days ago I was sniper-fodder and could barely get one or two kills per match and spent most of my time waiting to re-spawn (or taking some well-earned R&R swimming in the shallows of the bay where there was no fighting going on)
Last night though, I got a pretty consistant 6 or 7 kills per match. Still mediocre, but I’m getting there.
protip - try not to run around too much or shoot at things you can’t hit - that will just give away your position. Instead sit tight in a place with good cover and wait for the enemy to come to you.
BTW, the 1.50 patch was released for BF2 last week. Looks like they fixed the exploits the hackers were using and did a lot with balance (I can actually shoot down planes with AA). If you like 1943, you’ll love BF2 on PC. I think it retails for $9.99 nowadays. BF2 is almost four years old but the graphics still look great and there’s a huge community of players and lots of servers. I usually play a server named Robert Reed’s House.
Please note that the patch is 2 gigabytes and includes all the pay-only maps from last year for free, which is nice.
