Battlefield 2 Players List Update

Can we start a clan (like SDMB) or do we need a server to do that? I’m noobish on things of this sort. Or can we just put [SDMB] in the prefix?..but I guess anyone could do that.

More changes announced:

  • Server search filters now work properly
  • All mines (Claymore, Anti-vehicle, C4) can now be picked up by the same class that dropped it by using the “G” key.
  • Mines can no longer be destroyed with other explosives
  • Flash bang effect radius decreased
  • Added unlocks for Sniper and AT kits
  • Fixed a bug in terrain rendering with night vision, whereby terrain was still dark in dark areas.
  • Fixed a bug whereby mods that are not bf2 or not xpack permutate shaders every time a level is loaded.
  • Fixed a bug whereby non-xpack mods cannot use xpack shaders.
  • Fixed bug in TV guided missiles of Havoc helicopter
  • Bug in MP7 fire rate fixed. Ammo count increased and mag count and damage decreased
  • APC Update – “Chinese and MEC APCs can now shoot through penetrable materials”. This fix was a miscommunication to the patch team. Chinese and MEC APC’s have been reverted and the LAV25 now no longer shoots through penetrable materials.
  • Vehicles no longer disappear when viewed from some vehicles with a HUD (e.g. Tanks).
  • Performance gain found in static mesh rendering.
  • Detonation radius from grenade launcher explosions has been reduced.
  • Grenade launcher projectiles now have a minimum time before arming.

And I’m about a week or so away from my final unlock. Woo. Hopefully I’ll break 3.0 SPM too.

“- All mines (Claymore, Anti-vehicle, C4) can now be picked up by the same class that dropped it by using the “G” key.”

Thus making it easier to get your C4 kills as people rush in to pick them up. Hint: Always drop two packs…

I’ve been playing a lot more recently on a |BS:BF| server for a BloodSport gaming clan, and for one very damn good reason:

They kickban people without remorse for bunnyhopping. Or dolphin diving. Or ramming with helicopters. Or “hoarding the stupid”. Or just being an unrepentant idiot. It’s an amazing pleasure to play on a server without the above type of players.

In other amusing news, I parachuted out of a chopper on Mashtuur and landed atop the Mosque. No one ever, ever looks there, and you can capture that flag from directly above it prone behind a low wall. It’s almost criminal how some people will get hit in the torso from a M95, dive prone behind a barricade, and not even realize the shot came from above and behind them.

[sub]back and to the left … back and to the left[/sub]

I’ve also been playing on the moongamers mostly karkand and mostly oman servers. They have a very aggressive admin squad, and the admins will take a couple rounds to just stand around and observe the game, warning/kicking/banning as necessary.

As a result, I usually only need to wait a minute or so before a spot opens up in the game…

They’ve got some pretty harsh rules on the Oman server, but they only allow 48 players in, so if you want to play in vehicles, it’s a great map (24 vehicles for 48 players, as opposed to 64).

Small world. I recently deleted MoonGamers Mostly Oman from my favourites for the same reasons only a different spin (and my friend got banned for “stats padding” when he wasn’t. He was just too good.)

What are those?
Also, let me just state that the awesomeness of BF2 is only matched by how much it sucks as a game. The excruciatingly long load times, joining a game 30 seconds before it ends, more long load times, kicked off server for no reason and more long load times means it takes a fucking hour to find what should be a 15 minute game.

Bunny hopping is when you hop everywhere you go, constantly hopping like a damn bunny. Makes you harder to hit, makes it easier to shoot people with the grenade launcher because all you have to do is hit the ground at their feet. Originally made popular in the Doom games because being airborne caused you to take less damage from explosions (the force gets used to shove you away rather than hurt you; I don’t know if it works this way in BF2). They’re also nerfing the grenade launcher by including an arming range. W00t! So, the fix for bunny hopping is that triggers only work when your feet are on the ground, and the fix for n00b tubing is that grenades only go off if they hit something a certain distance away. We’ll see how that works out. Bunny-hopping is also very annoying when combined with c4, because you can throw the c4 far enough that when it lands, you can detonate it without killing yourself.

Dolphin diving is jumping into the air and then going prone while still in the air. You get the prone accuracy bonus, even though you’re airborne, for a split second. With practice, you can get headshots with otherwise inaccurate weapons.

I’m not certain what “hoarding the stupid” is, but it sure sounds like something you wouldn’t want to do.

I guess I don’t mind any of that stuff. From what I’ve experienced, it doesn’t help you all that much. The last thing you want to do is hop around so everyone can see you (and thus kill you).
I’m just excited because I unlocked the Barrett .50 cal sniper rifle. Man you can fuck some shit up with that thing. I even took out a Hind gunner with a head shot through the canopy. That was pretty sweet.

I just got a new computer so I can finally play BF2.

I loaded it up and was practicing in the solo mode.

When I got a few moves down, I clicked on multiplayer. It keeps having me sign up for an account and then tells me that I am not online.

Anyone know what I need to do to get past that? I am certainly online. The help button doesn’t really help.

I’ve been playing as Sexgod11 (I know it’s silly, but a girlfriend suggested the name a long while ago and I’m used to it), but I’m finding this game damn hard. Any tips from anyone on tactics/ways to not die? I find if I play as an anti-tank I can get some kills from taking out vehicles, but with a gun I tend to get beaten one on one. The odd thing is, for other online games (Halo, CS: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Medal of Honour) I do very well.

scule, the way I learned was to find large, mostly-full games. So, on the list of all internet games, click at the top of the number of Players column to sort it by players in-game, then click again to get all the big games at the top. Find a 64-player game that’s only missing a few players that has a relatively low ping (below 150, probably), and join that.

Once you’re in, take a look at the squads and see if you can join one with 4-5 people in it. Play whichever pack you’re most comfortable with, but also keep in mind the idea of playing a pack that complements the others–if they have no medic, that’s a great first choice and people will love to have you around (the top-ranked player at BF2s.com, with well over 50,000 kills, got over 50,000 of them while playing as a medic…); or, if they have a couple assault or anti-tank, play support so you can give them ammo. Or, if you just want to shoot things, play assault.

Try to avoid using grenades until you’re used to figuring out where people are on the minimap. Steer clear of vehicles (heh) until you learn how to drive.

Another tactic for learning the game is to play one map in single-player mode until you get used to it, then look for games, as above, that use that map. That way you’ll know what at least part of the map looks like.

“Run and gun” like in some other games doesn’t work so well in BF2. Weapons are too deadly and ranges too long for that. Find cover and fast.

Join a squad.

Jump in vehicles but be a gunner or passenger until you get some experience.

Don’t respawn at a point that’s about to be overrun or you’ll just be killed by “spawn campers”.

If you see an enemy vehicle…HIDE. Infantry (other than the SpecOps guy) can’t take out a tank or even a Humvee with their small arms.

You are very hard to see from a helicopter if you are motionless and under cover.

Hey msmith537 and middleman, what are your player names?

Been playing the Special Forces lately…some maps are fun, some are frustrating as hell, but still fun. I still look around to see if anyone is playing before I go to SF maps though.

Anyways, let me reiterate my question:

I could’ve sworn I posted a response to this yesterday but it seems I didn’t (or the hamsters ate it.)

Anyway, when you first create an account you’re given two options. One for a singleplayer account that may only be used offline and a multiplayer account that may be used both online and offline. I’m guessing that you made one of the former variety. In order to play online, you’ll need to make another account (it can use the same name) and mark it as a multiplayer account.

I got that done and got on to play. Now I have another problem!

After a brief game, I changed servers. Everytime I try to log on now to any server, it tells me that I could not connect to the server and should check my network settings.

Thanks for the tips folks. I was on today and actually did ok, middle of the pack in scoring. I like playing the anti-tank, and also specops. I’ve noticed that on none of the servers I’ve tried (and that’s many, I don’t keep a favourites list), I never hear voice chat, and that would be so helpfull. Anyone actually use a mic to talk instead of typing?

Mics don’t get used well; the servers I play on have a lot of talk with not a lot of information, usually. It can be fun, though. Depends on who’s playing, I guess.

If you’re getting a server connection error, have you checked to make sure you’re running the most recent version? I don’t know where you could download the patches from, but I’ve noticed that the error messages you get don’t necessarily match up with what’s wrong.

I always forget to “Disconnect from Server” before I move onto a different one…there should be a “Disconnect” button on the lower right to click on when you get that message…that’s if it is your actual problem.

I’ve heard Ethrilist (Colin_Blackthorn) get all Rambo on a Mic before…kinda funny. I have a Mic too, but rarely use it because my son says the Team Speak he uses is only for the Team Wonderful Server. Is there a program to download to use the Mic on any server?

I like playing Spec Ops for the carbines and the C-4 and also love playing an engineer that uses a tank or APC. I can’t fly an airplane or helicopter to save my life, but I don’t mind being a passenger and running the other weapons. Sniper is kinda fun too when you can mow down a squad and they have no idea where it’s coming from.

If you’ve got TeamSpeak downloaded, servers that use it usually have the connection information on their splash page (lower left of the Load Game screen) or on their clan homepage; once you’ve got them added in, they show up as separate folders in the list when you launch TeamSpeak. Double-click on the one you want to join, and you’re online at that server’s TeamSpeak. Usually they’ll have subfolders for the various games they support; especially ritzy setups have different folders for USMC or MEC/China, so you can talk to people in other squads without alerting the other side to what you’re doing. The LaidBackCrew uses it that way and will yell at you if you’re in the wrong one; TeamHAF is set up that way but they never use it because they’d rather talk smack at each other about how they just owned a team member…

If you’re getting disconnected a lot, GameSpy has been kinda wonky the past few days–you’ll get kicked once for failure to respond to MD3 queries, then you’ll get kicked for having a previous kick/ban. People say exiting & reloading will fix it, or rebooting. It seems to be server-based, so just switching to a new server also clears it up.
