So I just got BF3, and after the usually cussing and jiggerpokery re: Origin I got it up and running.
Now, I just finished my first two MP matches and had a blast, but I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing beyond “Run around, shoot the bad colors, heal the good colors”
So are there any obvious protips/concepts for new players I should be aware of, in order to be a better teammate? Among other things, I’d love if someone could tell me a bit about how Support and Engineer play as they get unlocks- I’ll probably only play enough to get one class pimped out, so I’d like to spend my time on something I’ll enjoy playing.
In the engineer class, simply running around after the tanks and apc’s will allow you to repair them as needed with that thing that looks like a blow torch. The same with support, just keep dropping the extra ammo, someone will pick it up at some point.
Since your new to the game, stick with the shotgun on Engineer and avoid augmenting it with lazer pointers or flashlights, they are blinding up close and do the job, but for snipers like me, they just announce your prescence.
The game must have changed quite a bit since I stopped playing a little bit ago.
My only advice is to switch servers. Look for ones that say either “noob friendly” or that make it a point to mention how they won’t tolerate bullshit.

[li]Stay out of hardcore servers until you’ve gotten up to speed with the game. You can configure this in the Origin search filters[/li][li]Concentrate on one class for a while (assault is good to get some effective unlocks.)[/li][li]Don’t charge around corners, take it slow & have your gun up & ready.[/li][li]Join a clan or gaming group (I’m with TOG -The Older Gamers, mainly an Australian group but they have NA/EU servers. Look around for what suits you.)[/li]Jump on youtube & have a look at some of the BF3 videos by rivaLxfactor, he has some great tips on how to improve - I watch them quite a bit.[/ul]
I recently got the game as well and I’m trying really hard to get my k:d ratio out of the negatives while still actually helping the squad I’m in and, in turn, helping my team win the match. It’s not an easy game. For one thing, most people have been playing it for a few months, have the cool unlocks, know the maps, know where people tend to be, etc. Me and you, we’re still learning the maps, don’t have the unlocks, have no idea where people like to congregate, etc. I’ve been playing for almost a week now, and I just played that Canal map for the first time yesterday (and went 14-5 and we won).
A couple of things I’ve learned…
A.call out vehicles and dudes…constantly. If you see a chopper flying and it aint your teams, look at it and hit the Q key. It will show up on everybody’s screen for a little bit and thus more likely to be killed. You’ll get 10 points when it’s destroyed/killed. Not a lot, but it will help you get them unlocks that much faster. It’s an easy thing to do and few people seem to do it.
2.Join a squad every time you get in a game. You can spawn on your squad mates. You’ll get bonus points for healing them or giving them ammo. The squad leader, if he is good, will be calling out where to be heading to next. You’ll get bonus points for following those orders too. (ie, taking the base, defending the base, etc) If you luck out, you’ll get in a good one. Just follow them around keeping them alive or filled with rounds and grenades. This will help your team win more than you running around dying over and over.
III.speaking of dying over and over, it’s going to happen. Sometimes it’s frustrating as hell to spawn and instantly die. Wash, rinse, repeat. Over and over. For this reason you should avoid TDM servers like the plauge. Play in the “goal” based games. I prefer Conquest over Rush, but I enjoy both.
D.As Declan said, the shotgun works. I love it. When defending on Rush maps, I’ll use it with the Support class. Combined with well placed clays you can rule a small area of the map all by yourself with little skill.
But the main things are call out them bad guys, join a squad. You might still die a lot, but at least you’ll be helping your team out as you learn the ins and outs.
(my first post in years…now to put my lurker hat back on…see ya in 2017!)
Support your team with medic packs and ammo to rack up points. Join a squad and work together, teamwork is key. With each squadmate fulfilling a specific role, you should be able to play a good match.
