I can just imagine Adama using these problems to emphasize the importance of the alliance with the Cylons.
The Galactica just isn’t going to last much longer. They could seriously start discussing making the Basestar the flagship of the fleet, with the Galactica secondary because of structural integrity issues. They need a large capital ship as a platform to launch their fighters, and if that old museum piece ain’t up for the job anymore, there’s exactly one option left for them.
Someone remind me about who Kelly is… he was looking like the mindless muscle for a while. Apparently though he has a bit of history to the point where Adama calls him the “brig rat” or something? I thought I detected a bit of struggle in him turning to the good side, but why is this important?
Count me as one who is disappointed that this mutiny thing got resolved in 2 episodes. It was a huge detail and they could have wrung a lot more tension out of it. That’s one thing that bugs me about BSG, they come up with these big important plot twists that could really churn out some good character drama, and then they get wrapped up in a bow after just a couple of episodes.
First of all, it sounds like the Eights are pretty handy and didn’t they just upgrade all the FTL drives to new Cylon ones? I’m sure they are all set with technical staff
Second, is it that easy to upgrade the engines? I mean the Galactica is like 2 miles long. Some of those engine components could be the size of a ten story building and weigh a hundred tons. I would think they would need more than a couple of SUV sized Raptor shuttles to transport them.
I second needing more info on Capt. Kelley - or I will have to go back and watch.
So Romo was trying to get Adama to use the pen first, right? That’s what he was trying to push at him - not really writing things down?? And then he just went ahead and used it himself?
I’m glad we had another Starbuck badass moment.
And curses on all of you who mentioned Kaylee - I’m having to hose my bf down again . . .
I thought that was the radio/transponder from Kara’s downed Viper. I recall he kept it. Would make sense why it was unjammable - its a native Colonial piece of hardware.
Regarding Gaeta’s discourse at the end with Baltar…I’m surprised no one has asked, because its been bugging me. What do you think he meant when he said (paraphrasing) “I only wish people will come to know who I really am” (To which Baltar responded with, very seriously, “I know who you are, Mr. Gaeta, I know who you truly are”)…
Finally caught up after a 7 hour marathon yesterday…
I read an article somewhere that made a point I agree with, namely that there’s no way this is going to end with humans and Cylons settling down together to live happily on the same planet. It just cannot happen. Ever. Too much pain. I thought it was an interesting metaphor that Gaeta turned out to have been motivated entirely by the pain in his missing leg, just as so many humans are motivated by the pain of their own losses.
I would not rule it out, referencing back to my comment about how they seem to have no qualms about introducing huge new conflicts and then tying them up with a bow. I will be surprised if the mutiny has any long-term conflicts with the fleet, and I’ll be surprised if at humanity doesn’t decide to live in peace with at least the final 5 Cylons, probably all the rebels too.
I thought it worked on a few levels. I think Baltar was saying that he sees Gaeta much as he sees himself… sometimes traitor, sometimes savior, often self-serving, but often serving others. Gaeta isn’t intended to understand the depth of this comment, so instead he takes it as Baltar just serving as the role of the weird cult-chaplain who knows what Gaeta did on New Caprica.
And they don’t need to, biologically. Among the 6 possible pairings of the 3 humanoid species, the only ones that can reproduce are human/human, human/skinjob, and Five/skinjob, right?. The skinjobs can all go back to the Colonies with the Five, maybe a few trusting humans for added breeding stock, and minus Athena and a few 6’s and 8’s for their hotness factor. They can say “Hey, look what we found!”, and be the heroes who save Cylonity from extinction. All the humans need in return is to have their new homeworld remain a secret.
Well, Kara may be a 4th species, true, but probably not one capable of reproduction. Gods know she’s tried, right?
BTW, Galactica has to have a few jumps left - they’re out in the middle of space, not within impulse-drive range of anything inhabitable. They have to get somewhere soon, but not necessarily immediately. Or else the Beings of Light will show up and magick them there.
I agree. I think they were stunned by the seriousness of the situation and just how strong/resolved/angry Roslin was. I don’t think they were second guessing her, but they were probably scared about what was coming next!
I didn’t get the impression Gaeta saw Gauis as being all culty with his comment. I thought Gatea seemed to take comfort in it.
I guess how you take the comment depends on how you see Gaeta. There’s been a lot of discussion on this board about whether he’s a not-entirely self-deluding fool who knows better but turns a blind eye to the truth or whether he’s an idealist who too easily believes what he wants to be true and tries to do the right thing but can’t get past that fatal flaw.
So maybe how you take Gaius’ comment depends on just how good/bad/ugly you think it is to see Gaeta’s true nature.
Ron Moore has said (something along the lines of) “most revolutions succeed or fail in the first few hours” so that’s what he was trying to portray here. I have no idea if he’s correct or not about revolutions, but he intended it to be quick.
In earlier seasons, I would have agreed with you that this is something they really could have milked for many more episodes. It didn’t seem *unbelieveable *that things happened as quickly as they did, but it was a rich opportunity for fascinating stories. However, now that we’re down to the final few episodes, I’m glad it was shown as it was since there are other areas to wrap up.
How wrapped up is the attempted coup anyway? Gaeta and Zarak were executed and Adama/Roslin regained control, but I don’t know if that means everyone is happy and getting along in the fleet. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in future episodes.
Galactica’s jump engines went offline before the count to jump was finished. There was no shot of any of the ships in the fleet jumping without Galactica. So it is unclear if any of them jumped.
In any case, they have had instances where only some ships jumped, or where Galactica didn’t jump. They’ve got procedures for dealing with that.
Capt. Aaron Kelly. He was in the miniseries, as the LSO (landing signal officer) of the Galactica – he’s the guy who oversees takeoffs and landings from the flight deck. If Galactica follows a command structure similar to that of aircraft carriers, he was probably third in command, after Tigh.
He showed up occasionally in episodes – for example, way back when the nuggets were training and Kat almost freaked out on her landing, he was the one on the wireless talking her in (while Starbuck was in another Viper, too).
Then came the writers’ need to try to have Romo Lampkin blown up for defending Baltar at his trial. They wanted a recognizable character to amp the shock value – so Kelly got slagged. Once caught, he was tossed in the brig, and hadn’t been seen since. Hence “brig rat”.
The actor who plays CPT Kelly was kind of chunky in the original miniseries. I think he was an example of how lazy and complacent the crew of Galactica was getting. When the regular series started, he’d obviously lost weight and buffed up. I’ve seen him in other scifi shows playing a muscle guy. The most embarrassing role must have been the birdman guy on Flash Gordon.
I don’t think RM wants to get much into the specifics of FTL, but I get the impression the Cylons’ more advanced FTL is more software than hardware. They upgraded a Raptor with what looked kind of like a pod brain, and that upgrade enabled a squad of Raptors to jump all the way back to Caprica in far fewer jumps than it would normally have taken. They didn’t make any physical upgrades to the other Raptors, from what I recall; it was more about making the right calculations.
Is that really accurate? I thought the fleet was given orders to jump, and some spooled their FTL while some did not. I do not recall anyone actually jumping, though I freely admit my memory is like Swiss cheese sometimes.
I recall Zarek ordering them to jump - this was before the Galactica started its jump sequence… I now do not recall if we ever got confirmation that they did Jump.
It does seem, however, that in the exterior shots that followed with the basestar, that there were far fewer ships still there.
Gaeta and Baltar have a history together. The way I interpret the comment is that Baltar knows what it is like to do what you think is right and then be forced into an impossible situation only to be viewed as a monster. I think the only difference is that Baltar tends to act in what he believes to be harmless self interest and Gaeta acts in what he believes to be what is right. Both tend to delude themselves as both Baltar’s self-interest and Gaeta’s altruism have serious repercussions for a lot of people.
