Just seen this miniseries. I did a quick search to find the obligatory discussion I’d missed, and couldn’t find one. Just threads about people saying it was going to be terrible because starbuck was a girl.
Anyone seen this? I started watching it a couple of nights ago. I really wasn’t expecting much. It sounded like desperation on the part of the sci-fi channel to try and revive this. I used to love it as a kid, but I thought it would be far to cheesy now.
As it turned out, I really enjoyed it. This is one of the best “re-imagining”'s I’ve seen. It brought the idea up to date, and made it aimed at a more adult audience. Seemed like a good idea, as the audience who used to enjoy the old show are now all grown up, and can enjoy the show all over again.
Really enjoyed the characters to this show. They got more development in a couple of hours that the cast of Enterprise got in two series. The new starbuck worked really well. I loved…
The scene at the end where she deliberately collided with Apollo to drag him back to Galactica.
I liked the darkness of it all. Particularly…
The way number six killed the baby
and
The scene when they had to leave the STL ships behind. That was heart wrenching.
Overall, it was excellent. I can’t wait for the series to start. I hope they can maintain this pace of story and not just resort to the “Planet of the week” format of soooooo many trek shows.
I have to agree. The thing that really struck me was actual, realistic space flight (i.e. the fighters didn’t respond and fly like Tomcats in a fluid environment).
Yeah, I know. I put it in quotes as I heard Ron Moore saying it. Still, I wonder if they can avoid it. After all, Galactica is essentially boldly going where no caprican has gone before.
I was quite impressed with the Viper maneuvers during the combat scene. I haven’t seen usage of momentum in space for a long time. Was it like that in the original series? (I was only 6 at the time)
Minor quibble, but I thought Starbuck sounded like that female Rimmer from the Red Dwarf episode ‘Parallel Universe’. Sounded like she was OD’ing on testosterone injections.
I particularly liked the sense of scale in the space scenes. For instance showing apparently nothing, and then zooming at high speed into a dot which becomes a cylon ship or a tiny ship landing in galactica.
Is it going to continue?
Not at all. In the original series, the vipers banked like airplanes. The original BS Galactica came out hot on the heels of the success of the first Star Wars movie, and was in many respects a Star Wars clone.
Or, for that matter, of soooooo many episodes of the original Galactica series.
Here’s a poem I read in an old issue of Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, which came out shortly after the original Galactica aired:
Blasterfight at the OK Corral
The Cylon delivered the threat,
And Starbuck was starting to sweat.
The rest I’ll pretend
'Cause I don’t know the end,
I busted the knob off my set.
I hated it ,it was more of a patetic soap opera than anything else.altho the new cylons were interesting, and yes I hate the fact that starbuck was a girl, and appolo was a jerk.
