Bear hunting bullets

Alternate method. Works for any bear.

You will need: A lawn chair, dull book, telescope, tweezers and a matchbox.
Settle into the lawn chair and start reading. You will soon fall asleep from boredom. Eventually, a bear will wander by. Wondering why you’re asleep in his territory, he will come closer. Upon spying the book, he will start reading and soon fall asleep.
At this point, you wake up, look at the bear through the telescope from the wrong end, pick him up with the tweezers and pop him in the matchbox.

Can be adapted to work with any large animal though you need a stronger telescope for whales.

This is by far the most imaginative thing i’ve read on SD for a while. NICE!

Excellent post, running_coach

what makes you assume that’s why he’s doing it?

I’m planning to hunt black bear in south-eastern Idaho, where I live. I have a German shepherd that I might take with me but she’s not trained for hunting. I’m a disabled person so hopefully I won’t have to travel too far from my vehicle.

There is a good reason, it helps manage the bear population and I get free meat and a nifty rug. I had no idea that bear hunting was supposed to physically change me though, how does that work?

I thought for polar bear all you needed was global warming…

I can think of two things that should physically change about bear bunters after a successful hunt. You should have a belly full of bear chili and you should be warmer laying on a bear skin rug. Assuming i manage to draw a deer or elk tag this fall I’ll also get a bear tag and hopefully get a warm rug/blanket and several pots of chili.

That being said most black bears are the size of deer so you should be fine with a 30-06. I’ll be out this fall with a 308 and I’ve taken cow elk with my rifle that were about 1000 pounds. That being said practice, practice, practice with whatever you pick so you can hit what you aim at.

'06, use heavy bullets (180 grain plus), and don’t sweat the rest. Federal makes Premium Ammunition with Nosler Partition bullets; them or others like Trophy Bonded/A-Square/pick-the-Gucci bullet, will be just fine. Black bear aren’t as dangerous as the other two/three NA bears. While I think you’d still be good with an '06 vs those, I can see why others want something with more gusto.

Black bear aren’t as active as deer in my experience: are you planning on baiting them, still-hunting them, using dogs? I’ve not hunted Idaho. It doesn’t sound like hiking up multiple mountain ranges and glassing is up your alley. Would hiring an outfitter to bait be overkill?

Best of luck. AIUI, bear meat makes really good sausage. Hope you get a great bear for a rug.

But Barbi was a bunny.

…and he wasn’t pumping a 24" barrel with rifle sights welded or riveted onto it…

Nitpick: sights aren’t riveted or welded. They’re often dovetailed, sometimes held in place by screws, or even silver soldered once in a while. I’ve never seen sights that were riveted or welded even once.

My buddies from my archery group regularly take black bear with medium weight primitive bows and arrows. They all say that bears are soft and easy to penetrate, but bullets and arrows work very differently from each other.

I think I would rather be shot with a bullet than have any modern broadhead-equipped arrow go through me. That’s like being shot and stabbed.

I mean, we’re talking about literal flying razor blades.

A deer hunter told me that an arrow sticks in the deer, but a crossbow bolt goes through and exits the body.

I’ve seen complete penetration from recurves, compounds bows, crossbows, and compound crossbows. Hitting bone, or not, makes the biggest difference.

Well I do have a compound bow that I want to use on an elk hunt but I’m not sure I’m yet crazy enough to hunt bear with one.

I didn’t know people eat bear. What does bear meat tastes like?

Meat. It tastes like meat. It’s rich like pork and can be greasy.

So that’s what “loaded for bear” means. I always wondered about that expression.

What happens if the bear has been eating goose?
