Thanks for the props SentientMeat. In the spirit of GD, I should point out that I’m not attacking Ephraim. The disconfirmation paradox can happen to anyone with a strongly held belief. Einstein’s refusal to accept the implications of Quantum theory can be viewed as a mild form of DP.(very mild.) The point is that arguing someone out of this kind of cognitive dissonance is very hard and probably requires some theraputic expertise. It ain’t gonna happen on a message board. I hate to sound like therapist, but what can I say?

BTW, I got the sites by googling “disconfirmation” and “cult.” There’s other sites and books out there. It’s an interesting phenomenon.

Brilliant! Absolutely classic example of ad-hoc rehashing.

I visited this thread a few days back (just before ephraim returned) and I was on the point of posting a comment to the effect that I expected “Arafat” would morph into “ummm… actually, Arafat’s regime”. I closed the window without posting because I didn’t expect ephraim to return (can’t predict 'em all, I suppose).

I for one am now waiting to read a confirmation by The New Prophet Greater then God that I really am dead because - strange as it may sound - I still don’t feel nor look like a Zombie. (I even survived my own SDMB-suicide as I came to discover today.)
