Beatles: Red, White, Blue

As an addendum to Cabbage’s reply:

You’re sort of right, in a literal sense. By the time of the White Album, the hostility between members was open. John and George worked together, and Paul and Ringo worked together. The only time all four worked together at the same time was on the cut “While my guitar gently weeps”, with Clapton. On the other tracks where all four appear, the tracks were recorded at different times, as they could barely stand being in the same room at this point.

It’s interesting to watch the movie “Let it Be” from this perspective. It’s not difficult to see the hostility between members in this movie.

Still trying to think of something witty to say here

The soon to be released CD has 79 min of “hits”. Should be a good package in the car, for instance.

I’ve quite gotten to like the newer Yellow Submarine CD, though I have them both.

Personnally, Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt Pepper stand out, since they were the first two LPs I bought. I had not even heard stereo before that. So it was neat. I bought a stereo of my own two years later, with Headphones. The Beatles have always been a media band for me. Few of us actually saw them live. I wouldn’t bother with Paul on tour…sorry!

The first album is quite a historical landmark, when you compare it with all the crap albums released then. Albums had two songs plus filler crap those days. It may be too old for some of you. Let iT Be, despite the film and events, is a great Band effort, especially the Billy Preston assisted songs. Past Master 2 has some more of those, eg Don’t Let Me Down, which SHOULD have been on Let It Be.

You forgot to mention that the Yellow Submarine CD has done away with Martin music. It actually consists fo 15 bona fide Beatles songs.

My personal favourites:

White Album
Rubber Soul
Abbey Road
Pepper
Revolver

One Lennon album which I particularly like and isn’t often mentioned is Walls and Bridges. My favourite is probably John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band; and, of course, there’s Imagine (I positively LOVE Gimme some truth and How do you sleep at night?: John Lennon at his scathing best).

As for McCartney, his first solo, McCartney is his best. There are some who say it went downhill from there.

I have a soundtrack CD to the movie Imagine, combines Beatle tracks and Lennon solo tracks…

I agree that you should buy them all. I have the complete Beatles Library, including Blue album, Red album, both Past Masters CDs and Beatles Live At the BBC, all of the Anthologies, and the LP of Tony Sheridan singing “My Bonnie” with the Beatles backing him up, the first time all four played together, though Ringo hadn’t joined the band yet.
I think everybody should have all 251 Beatles songs in their CD/LP collection.

I give my vote for White Album or Revolver

Yes, everybody should have the 45 bootleg of Hello Little Girl. It’s colored vinyl!
Seriously, I do like some of the corny old stuff, like Three Cool Cats. Even Cry For A Shadow…

I think you should buy them all, in a boxed set. I wish I had, instead I spent twice as much money buying them all seperately. Also, keep in mind that the Beatles albums are so different from current ones - EVERY song on EVERY album kicks ass. If you buy the new Wallflowers CD, maybe you’ll like 10 songs and skip 3, but with the Beatles, it’s worth it to hear every last song.

The only thing I can say is I don’t adore these albums:

  1. Meet the Beatles
  2. Magical Mystery Tour

If you skip these two, it’ll be ok.

OH! Don’t waste money on the red and blue albums - they’re just repeats of the others. If you buy them and not the actual albums, you’ll miss a lot of gems that weren’t as popular but are still incredible.

Make sure you buy Past Masters Vol. 1 and 2. All the hit singles.

Save the Anthologies for later. You really need to feel close to the guys to understand how awesome it is to hear John fuck up “This Boy.”

You can get a cool boxed set from beatlemania. I know they have a catalog, check to see about a website.

Does anyone know whether beatlemania has one or not? Or the number? That would help.

PS If you are going to get just a few, get:

  1. Revolver
  2. Sgt Pepper
  3. Abbey Road.

The rest tie for fourth.

I saw who started this thread and I was immediatelty confused…

Meet the Beatles is one of Capitol’s American-album abominations. Don’t ever buy those! Only buy the UK albums.

Also, don’t skip the Red and Blue albums. If you’re a Beatles fan, mixes for several of the songs are different, and it’s interesting to hear them.

MMT probably is my least favorite Beatles album. Not to say that it’s bad at all, but “Flying” and “Blue Jay Way” rank pretty low for me in an ordered list of their songs. “Fool on the Hill” is an outstanding song, though, as is the title track.
