Been 20 years since Tommy got his tonsils out.

I was listening to my favorite cutting edge indie rock today and realized… Oh man. The Replacements recorded Let it be in 1984. The only music that I ever got in on the front edge of when it was considered cool, and it’s now older than most of the people playing indie rock on college stations.

I now have no idea what current “cool” indie rock is. Can anyone come up with a 2004 version of The Replacements for me to try?

I was going to include what happened to Gary as the title, but decided against it. Sigh. Lost my sense of rebellion along with my musical knowledge.

How young are you?
How old am I?

I dunno how cool these bands are considered to be, but some of the more popular “indie”-type bands today are Franz Ferdinand, the Killers, the Strokes, the Hives, Pavement (sorta older), the Shins, and Modest Mouse. Not all of these bands are on independent labels though.

I’m only twenty-three but I really like the Replacements.

I was into the Mats in the day… hell, still am. Here’s some newer stuff in the same vein…

Eagles of Death Metal
Dirtbombs
Electric Frankenstein
The Minus 5
The Sights
20 years, huh? Well, at least with all the drugs it only seems like 10.

You do know that the Minus 5 have been around for a dozen years or so?

If you’re looking for more good indie rock, check out KEXP if you haven’t already done so.

A quick forum search should pull up a good Replacements thread started by yours truly a month or so back - sorry, no time to link it now.

Sure, I know the Minus 5 (and to a lesser extent, Electric Frankenstein) have been around for a while now, but they’re still putting out good albums. I especially recommend the Minus 5’s recent release, “In Rock”. 'S great.

Oh, whoops, I’d parsed your earlier post as “…newer bands in the same vein”.

I haven’t heard “In Rock” yet, but coincidentally I’m going to see the Minus 5 tonight, so I suppose they’ll be playing songs from it.
