So, I’m just lately getting in to this sound, listening to a lot of Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, old Bad Religion, stuff like that. A couple things.
What are some bands I should give a listen to?
Is anyone listening to the band Murderdolls? They make me optimistic that, with the rise of garage rock last year, a hardcore punk revival may be on the way in. I highly recommend at least listening to the tracks “197666” and “Slit My Wrist”. Their album is a whole lot of offensive, angry, insane fun. Let me know what you think when you’ve given a listen.
I highly recommend all the following bands/albums…
Flipper (Generic Flipper)
DOA (Something Better Change)
Nomeansno (Wrong)
The Damned (Machine Gun Ettiquette)
The Replacements (Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash)
Husker Du (New Day Rising)
Forgotten Rebels (This Ain’t Hollywood)
Minutemen (Double Nickels on the Dime)
Meat Puppets (II)
Radio Birdman (Radios Appear)
Stiff Little Fingers (Inflammable Materials)

i hope this helps. feel free to email me for more, i have an extensive collection of music…
I would second Husker Du and the Replacements (being from Minneapolis )
and Bad Brains is unbelievable, they are from D.C. and are a bunch of Rastamen playing hardcore with little reggae/rocksteady interludes. Fabulous, unique band.
and for pure laughs (and not much more) I recommend the Surf Punks.
The Minutemen were the best. Besides the already-mentioned epic Double Nickels on the Dime (which includes “Corona”, forever tarnished by being the theme song to Jackass), check out Post-Mersh Vol I (actually two albums–What Makes a Man Start Fires and The Punch Line) and Ballot Result.
BTW, I’m going to see Mike Watt play in April. If you get a chance to see him, do it. He’s the greatest bass player you will ever see.
Another big thumbs up for Bad Brains–my first ever show. However, I add the cautionary note that there is a rather short list of studio releases which were really up to snuff. After Quickness the lead singer, HR, left the band for awhile and even after he returned Bad Brains really wasn’t the same anymore.
The standard late-80’s local list for me was (and still is):
Government Issue
Black Market Baby
Scream
Marginal Man
Ignition
If you find yourself liking the DC scene you can find examples of most of the above for pretty cheap through Ian MacKaye’s label and website, Dischord. If you want the ultimate Dischord sampler, look no further than here.
If you want to check out some lesser known bands, there’s a fine series of compilations called Hyped To Death, which crams 70+ minutes of (mostly) vintage punk on one CD-R for around $9 - much better value than most of the ‘Killed By Death’/‘Bloodstains’ compilations. (You can find them at a search engine near you).
I’d agree with most of the recommendations above. My two top recommendations would The Cramps, esp. the album Bad Music for Bad People (their cover of “She Said” by Hasil Adkins is almost as cool as the original), and Minor Threat. I’d specifically recommend Minor Threat’s first album, but you can get both of them on one CD called Compleat Discography and you’ll never be sorry, though your neighbors may.
Speaking of the freakish one-man band Hasil Adkins, he might be worth checking out as well; he’s more hillbilly than punk, but he’s a living embodiment of punk sensibility:
You can’t go wrong with anything in their catalog - although they specialize in Streetpunk, they also diversify with everything from Southern “murdercore” redneck punk rockers Antiseen to an oi! band consisting of Japanese girls.
I gave the Murderdolls a listen. Couldn’t find the tracks you were specifically mentioning, but did listen to “Let’s Go To War”… you’re right… it’s good to see hardcore coming back after a decade of mall punk.
Now that I have a bit of a better idea where you are coming from, I have one further recommendation for you (although I stick by my previous ones): The Dayglo Abortions. You can find some mp3’s here. As far as their albums go… “Feed Us A Fetus” is them at their best.
My reccomendation, which some will take issue with is: AFI Get Black Sails in the Sunset
My friends and I all love it. I’ve been told they’re not “really punk” but, who cares? They’re good.
