Beer and cheese soup - Has anyone tried it?

I’m a fan of Campbell’s chunky soups and they’ve introduced some new varieties I like. Hearty cheeseburger, Swiss mushroom, Philly cheesesteak. The other day I saw a new one on the shelf, beer and cheese. No, that’s not a typo. Beer, as in barley, hops, and yeast. I know beer and cheese soup is a popular recipe, but I’ve never seen a mass-produced soup in a can with beer before, so I bought a can.

It’s basically a cheddar and potato soup with beef and bacon in it, and as a soup by itself, is pretty good. It has a definite aroma of beer, I would say a yeasty odor which becomes more apparent as you heat it. And you can definitely taste the barley and hops. It’s not bad, a little unique, and I’ll probably try more of it in the future.

I do the first part.

Hard.

Reminds me of Welsh Rarebit, which is basically beer and cheese soup, and can be fantastic.

I haven’t tried Campbell’s but beer cheese soup is standard here in this part of Minnesota/Wisconsin. We usually purchase this one: http://grocery.lundsandbyerlys.com/pd/Lunds-and-Byerlys/Beer-Cheese-Soup/10-oz/018169802038/ - but I’ve made it from scratch as well.

You top it with popcorn

I’ve never had it from a can, but homemade, yes, largely when I lived in Wisconsin. It’s one of those thongs that taste good, but I just don’t eat anymore - beer, potatoes, and cheese (usually topped with crumbled bacon.) It’d take me a week to work that off.

Good thing you stopped eating thongs.

Had the real deal a couple times in restaurants noted for it. Meh. The stuff in the can seems unlikely to be better.

Beer cheese soup is lovely. One of the few things I’d ever go back to Wisconsin for.

Haven’t tried the Campbell’s version, but the wife makes a killer beer cheese soup from scratch, so it hasn’t been necessary.

Beer and cheese soup is best served with (stale) popcorn as a topping! Some restaurants in Minnesota actually serve it that way.

Recipe? BTW I “like” Campbell’s chunky soups–comfort food. OTOH, the new varieties are across the board abysmal. I’ve tried them all, and I can’t imagine how you can make cheeseburger soup taste bad (I even like cheeseburger hamburger helper). Ditto for Philly cheese steak–and I LOVE mushrooms, but they are all terrible.

I’ve always liked it with crumbled up Saltines and a 1/3-pound double bacon cheeseburger on the side. If that doesn’t clog your arteries, nothing will!

The new “Pub Inspired” series. Yecccch! I too tried the “cheeseburger” variety not long ago. They should have called it “Gainesburger soup” instead.

OTOH, the spicy Italian pasta soup isn’t too bad; it just needs a thicker broth.

The wife wings her soups, but this one has a base of chicken broth, beer, and shredded sharp cheddar, with additions to taste of cayenne, hot sauce, mustard powder, garlic powder, onions, thyme, and cream or sour cream as a thickener. You can also add some shredded carrot to give more balance to the soup.

Add bacon and potatoes and you get Loaded Baked Potato soup.

Byerly’s http://www.lundsandbyerlys.com/recipes/recipes/b/beer-cheese-soup.aspx

From Le Cellier - the Canadian restaurant in Epcot

(I’ve done both of these - but I just BUY the Byerly’s soup - its easier than making it).

I like Beer. I like Cheese. I also like Beer Cheese soup, although the ingredients that give it the name seem only tangentially related.

I’ll have to try the stuff in a can now.

I’ve developed my own recipe over the years where I combine a beer-cheddar soup with a beef stew. It’s pretty dang good, if’n I do say so. Incidentally, it includes a couple cans of Campbell’s cheddar soup.

I love hot beer & cheese dip with soft pretzels, and I like plain old beercheese, but I have never had beer & cheese soup. Anyone care to share a good recipe? Sounds like something I need to try.

Look up to post #15.

Grew up in Wisconsin and now live in Minnesota and always had beer cheese soup as a staple in a lot of restaurants. I never considered that it may be a regional thing.
