I have to vote for Budwieser Budvar, the original Budwieser who had their name stolen by a load of Yanks who trademarked it. Now the poor buggers have a load of hassle using their own name. I have herd that this fantastic brew is not avaliable in the US because of this. Your loss.
Pilsner Urquell however makes a very good subsitute.
I do however agree with those who have made the follwing comment, don’t judge a country’s beer by the mass produced and mass marketed product.
[sup]Oh great guys, now y’all made me pull a Shiner Bock out of the fridge…[/sup]
OK Aussies, I’ve got two questions:
[li]I’ve heard that the Fosters in America is really a Canadian beer. Anyone have any opinion on this?[/li][li]Wots a Greenie?
[/li]
Hey k-w’m, is it just me, or did Shiner Bock get a bit of a metallic taste after Lone Star bought them out? It’s still good; maybe it’s just that I’m no longer broke and it’s no longer 2.65 a six-pack…
Beyond this, I’ll bow out and let the experts hold forth…
except to say- if you want a really good beer, try Pearl (think cream soda with hops  and rebuses inside the caps.)
Foster’s is brewed under licence in variouis countries. I don’t know where the US version is brewed, but it could well be Canada.
As an aside, my guess is that the adverstising for Foster’s in Oz is meant as advertising for the CUB stable of beers (VB, Melbourne, Resch’s, Crown etc). I can confirm its lack opf popularity here: I have literally never seen anyone buy it.
A Greenie? Well, an environmentalist or a piece of nasal discharge… but it’s Victoria Bitter, also known as vitamin B. Now you can go into a bottleshop in Australia and like a local say:[ul]'sgown?. Slab of green stubbies. Only got warm? Yeah, longnecks, no wuckers. Catcha.[/ul]Why “green”: the label is green. Not quite everything works that way. Power’s bitter (yet another bland lager) is frequently referred to as a “Sorry Bondy”.
Word of advice on VB, Australia’s most popular beer: drink very cold. That way the sweetness and “essence de working man’s sweat” that is the core of VB’s dubious appeal will be in appropriate balance.
I went to the Great American Beer Fest in Denver last weekend. If they have these in your town you have to go, they are the best time. Ours costs like 40 bucks, but its worth it. And none of that wussy wine-drinker spit-it-out stuff for that crowd. I was all prepared to give a complete rundown of the wolfman beer index, but after many many shots of beer I guess I lost track of my notebook.
So here is a quick rundown, unfortunately without specific brands.
Stouts in general were very good, I had a couple of chocolate stouts that were truly excelent. American Pale ales are also getting much better, there was a high level of quality. Hefe-Wiezens and Brown Ales on the other hand all tasted like shit, I would deffinately stay with the imports for a Hefe fan. Some of the super high proof beers and barley wines were surprisingly good as well, but that is just a category I don’t really see a need to drink on a regular basis. The rest of the stuff there was fairly good,(except for the mass produced crap I ignored) and there was much less of the bizarre stuff like orange, strawberry and kiwi ale than there was the last couple years.
My favorite Canadian brew is Razzy Kat, brewed locally here in Edmonton by the Alley Kat Brewing Company. It contains rasberry juice, giving it a nice fruity taste. Also, I have found that any beer brewed by Big Rock Breweries here in Alberta is high quality. Out of the good ol’ USA, my favorite brew is Rolling Rock, out of Latrobe, PA. You can’t get it up here in the Great White North, but anytime I hear of someone going south, I recruit them to be a buyer. Anchor Steam out of San Fran is also very good. On the international scene, my favorite is Lion Lager out of South Africa, as well as Golden Phoenix out of Mauritius. Lion Lager is available here, while Golden Phoenix I get as a gift from a relative working in S.A. What can I say, I know what I like, and will go to great lengths to track it down! Happy drinking!
I’m not picky when it comes to Beer, any Beer will. I say if you can choke down the first few, then your taste buds start to go, so that the next 6 or 7 will all taste like water.
My ex-father in law loved Tecate with lime, I like Dos Eqis, Moosehead, St Pauli and even MGD. But my favorite Beer is FREE BEER, I never pass up a free Beer when offered.
I would like to try Duff Beer like Homer Simpson. Beer and donuts , the breakfast of Champions.
I think that “All About Beer” recently reported that most of the Fosters in America is indeed now made in Canada.
Have to second the nomination of Rolling Rock as a crap beer. When I lived out east, it was one of the bad/cheap locals (like the horrid Jenny). Now, it’s marketed to people who simply have too much money. Save some of the cash, buy some crap, and use the rest to buy me a New Glarus Belgian Red.
I’ve heard that Kilkenney is actually the same as <forget the actual beer, sheesh>, but with an “Irish-sounding” name given to it. (The original beer being English). This may be a load of crap, though, so feel free to correct me.
The funny thing is beer is better the farther away it’s made.
Mexican beers like Corona are big here, but in Mexico the imports are the ones the big spenders like best, to show off.
Like you pay a high price for Chinese beer, but it’s very ordinary.
Hmm, as far as south of the border, how 'bout Negra Modelo, a fine beer, and yes corona is piss. Chech beers are of course quite delicious, pilsner, budvar, and of course one can’t forget Staropramen. Guiness of course is a staple, but the crown must go to the Belgians for a number of their brews, one of my favorites is Duvel. mmmm and Hacker-Pchorr (sp?)is also one of my favorites, love the wheat brews.
Life is too short to drink beer you can see through.
While it’s been awhile since I bought much commercial beer (I started making my own 7+ years ago) I will agree that the little American brews are getting better and better. Still my current favorite is the Krik beer (cherry flavored) I had during a recent trip to Belgium. Does anybody know if you can get it in the states, particularly California?
It’s quite amusing to me that I launched a beer thread that cracked its second page despite the fact that I absolutely hate beer. Every now and then, I try one just to make sure that I hate it as much as I did that last time I tried. Zenster has been doing his darndest to condition my palate to like beer, although his initial attempts have not met with much success.
