® Before E in STRAIGHT DOPE

I noticed that on the Board’s banner (it’s right above you) it says THE STRAIGHT DOP®E. Why is this? I always see it at the end of the phrase.

‘I always see it at the end of the phrase.’

I was referring to the ®, BTW.

Because it wouldn’t fit. Logos are often oddly-shaped, so the registration symbol goes wherever they can fit it. Cf. The Tonka logo

Aah. Thanks. I guess I was thinking too hard :).

It would fit, but the banner would have to be extended a bit.

Besides Tonka, Pepsi is another company I can thing of with unique ® placement. After the second P.

It’s one of those illuminati things.

® before E except after C, or when it says eh’, as in neighbor' and weigh.’’

How do you make that little “®” sign? My keyboard doesn’t have an “®”.

It’s “Alt” + 0174.

Like so: ®

There are a number of numerical codes with Alt that make special symbols such as that one.

I suggest using the following:

®

It can be found in Arnold’s link, it’s standards-compliant, it’s system-independent, and best of all, it’s easier to remember.
