Being on a civil grand jury

My city/county (contiguous) is taking applications and I am sorely tempted. I have the time, since I am retired. Apparently their job is to look into any city or county department they want to, interview officials, subpoena records etc., then write up their findings. It sounds like a great way to learn (possibly more than I want to know) about local government.

Has anyone here every done it? I imagine it is quite different from a criminal grand jury. Anyway, I’d love to hear more about your experiences before I commit myself.

Speaking as an former UK county council official, I’d have loved the opportunity to show off the work we were doing to interested citizens.
