Some reports say killed by shrapnel, some say she was shot in the neck.
I knew they were going to get her, whomever “they” are. I can’t help but think she knew this, too. The thing is, I have a hard time believing she came back for any other reason than a power grab, which will definitely get you killed in a military dictatorship (which I believe Pakistan is in everything but name perhaps).
Pakistan is a truly effed up bunghole of a country, and they have nukes. Og help us all.
NPR has no official confirmation on her death, so perhaps there’s a lot of chaos and the report’s are in error, but I’m not betting on it.
I am not familiar with her political history…do you think she would have made a better prime minister than Musharraf?
Latest per CNN: Shot. By suicide bomber who then suicided by bomb.
Apparently wanted to take out BB and as many random bystanders as possible.
BBC saying she’s gone as well.
Yep, BBC says she was killed. I can’t wait to hear what that weasel Musharraf says about it.
Or maybe they’re just being careful. They’ve reported that news accounts in Pakistan and that her party leader is saying she’s dead, but apparently, they’ve not heard from hospital spokespeople or government officials. Ah, they’ve just broke in and stated that they’ve confirmed the death. They did have a reporter on the ground in the area, BTW.
Time for another Sate of Emergency, I guess
She was prime minister twice prior to Musharraf. In my opinion she was better, but ymmv. Her party was pro-democracy but she left the both times under charges of corruption. Always hard to tell how real those are or trumped up by opponents and how closely related to her.
Yeah, the NPR reporter pointed out that no one in Pakistan could escape remembering that this was the same city where her father was hanged by the army, and that it’s considered the “home town” of the army. If they’re running amok there, then you need a state of emergency, unless, of course, you had something to do with it, but I’m sure that Musharraf had nothing to do with this.
Say what you will about the allegations of corruption. Has there ever been a political leader/politician that wasn’t? I doubt it. She was pro-democracy and an advocate for women’s rights. This is a sad day.
Is Al Qaeda claiming responsibility?
They have their own problems. There are plenty of idiots on all sides of the political compass in that country to go on happily slaughtering each other for decades without the need for Al Qaeda to be involved.
Sad indeed.
CNN’s talking heads are saying the U.S. was pushing for her return. Why? Were we trying to incite instability, or did we really think that NOW is the best time for change?
NPR’s interviewing a former collegue of hers, and he puts the blame solely on Musharraf’s shoulders.
Depressingly predictable. Of course some terrorist group will claim responsibility, and Musharraf (HE was the one in my death pool, Light burn him) will vow to catch the vile perpetrator, and nothing will be done.
Meanwhile money has changed hands, and Bob’s your uncle.
Oh please. I don’t believe for one second that the US would take a public position in support of Bhutto that Musharraf would consider antagonistic toward him. Bush still bleats like a freaking sheep in support of Musharraf.
I do agree with you that this is a sad day, sad, sickening and disgusting.
Yeah, okay. OJ Musharraf will find the real killer. Look in the mirror, you animal.
