Benefit Concert for AIDS song cover suggestions....

There’s a benefit for one of the local AIDS charities that’s having performers come up and do from 1-3 songs a piece.
My friend Chris and I are thinking of performing and probably do one or two covers and an original. He sings and plays some guitar, I’ll play guitar (or mandolin or dulcimer if he plays guitar) but I sing atrociously so I’ll just do a half smile the whole time. We’re both pretty much into the same type of music which tends to lean towards female singer/songwriters (Joni, Tori, Ani, and others that end in “I”) I’d like to keep it from getting to maudlin and depressing but I’m stumped for songs to cover. Any ideas?

Okay, maybe not the least depressing song in the world, but an amazing song and possibly kind of fitting with the event – “Tony” by Patty Griffin is a great great song about a homosexual teenager who commits suicide. But the song itself, musically, if you didn’t listen to the words, sounds like just a normal song. It’s very touching, and it’s a really great song and also very easy to learn on the guitar (I learned to play it in a day and I am the most mediocre guitar player ever). Beautiful song.

(can you tell I like this song?)

Get up stand up- Great song to inspire movement. Don’t give up the fight

Many rivers to cross- Great song for the long haul that has been AIDS recognition and support

John Lennon’s “Imagine”

You might want to change/add a couple of lyrics to adapt to the theme.
