Can’t say the theme song is very catchy—at least not in comparison to the later incarnations.

It is the one I grew up with, and the tune is hummable.

My criterion for “better” in this case boiled down to “I’ve heard of him.” So Benji it is.

Littlest Hobo by a mile. Better theme song, and “able to jump out of a helicopter and put out forest fires” trumps “stole some keys and looked cute.” 
In all fairness, I’d take Benji over that twit Lassie any day.
