My son is putting together a family history project for a school project. We have an ancestor who was injured as Gettysburg. He was one of Berdan’s Sharpshooters.
He asked me how to pronounce Berdan, which is helpful, since this is an oral report. Anyone know for sure?
I’ve always pronounced it (and heard it pronounced) “Burdahn”- same as the cartridge primer type (which appears to have been invented by the same chap, interestingly).
I should probably mention I’m not an American, though, so the pronunciation may very well be different where you are. …
Entertainingly enough, I heard of them for the first time today, when I heard a paper about them. The speaker, a civil war historian, pronounced it “Burdahn” - as the poster above suggested.
