Bernie Casey, RIP

Dead at 78.

Lots of credits, but I’ll always remember him as the Special Forces commander in Spies Like Us.

Barely recognizable, but he played The Gargoyle in Cornel Wilde’s TVM, “Gargoyles,” back in the early 1970s. Strange movie.

Oh wow.

Awesome voice. Huge screen presence. The Man Who Fell To Earth, Cleopatra Jones, I’m Gonna Get You Sucka… he was even in Brian’s Song.

RIP Mr. Casey; you done good.

Damn. “Sharky’s Machine” is one of my all time favorite movies. He was awesome in it - hilarious at times.

He certainly transcended his origins. He spent 8 years in the NFL in the 60s. He was successful enough as an actor that his beginnings as a pro athlete became just a footnote.

He looked good in red, too.

A few years ago, I saw an old NFL Films feature on Casey, from around the end of his NFL career; even then, he was a renaissance man, writing poetry and painting, as well as getting his feet wet in acting. I had no idea until I saw that film, and I was very impressed.

That’s what I mostly knew him for (love that movie!), along with his Felix Leiter role. Never knew he was in the NFL, but then I’m not a sports fan. RIP, Bernie!!

I remember him mainly as U.N. Jefferson in Revenge of the Nerds. I knew he’d been an NFL player, but he was a fine actor also. He will be missed. RIP, Mr. Casey.

He was one of the great “Oh that guy” actors and he had some great roles and real presence on the screen. RIP.

If you have Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Amazon Women on the Moon, Revenge of the Nerds (and two sequels), Ants!, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and Cleopatra Jones on your resume, you did okay in my book.
