Better than the last few (or more) years, if only because there are at least a couple songs that are actually good. Between the White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age for me - I’m going with the latter.
And again, some of my favorite songs from '03 that didn’t make the list:
The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
Belle & Sebastian - I’m A Cuckoo
The Dandy Warhols - We Used To Be Friends
The New Pornographers - The Laws Have Changed
My Favorite - Burning Hearts
Joe Strummer - Coma Girl
The Raveonettes - That Great Love Sound
M83 - America
R.E.M. - Bad Day
Wire - In The Art of Stopping
The Notwist - Consequence
Seven Nation Army gets chanted at soccer matches. Incredibly durable riff. Gets my vote. Also love the heartbeat riff of All my Life by the Foos and QotSA’s No One Knows. Nicely heavy representation…
Jane’s Addiction “Just Because”, of course. That was easy.
The also-rans of 2003 from Playlist Research.
Looking at these also-rans always reminds of songs I forgot - anyone else remember FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE - “Stacy’s Mom”.
Favorite also-ran from the year - QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - “Go With The Flow”
Also, IMO, most interesting cover of the year - JOHNNY CASH - “Hurt”
Finally, a handful of contenders I don’t have to be shy about voting for. “Seven Nation Army” gets my vote here.
Voted for Evanescence, it’s held up for me surprisingly well. Otherwise it’d have been the Stripes or RHCP.
The White Stripes, obviously.
Stopped when I got the White Stripes and just voted without bothering to read the rest of the list.
7 Nation Army in a walk-off home run.
Good songs overall though the White Stripes rule this poll deservedly. It does not need my vote so I went with Trapt’s “Headstrong” since it reminds me so much of being 16 in 2003.
Seven Nation Army is the only possible choice here. And it’s far from their best number.
Evanescence is great but not in the same league IMHO.
Seven Nation Army is a no brainer.
I may be the only person who doesn’t love 7NA, but I find it kind of turgid. Queens of the Stone Age got my vote instead. That said, 2003 was a remarkable year for albums.
Jay-Z, The Black Album
Notwist - Neon Golden
Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
The Wrens - The Meadowlands
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place
I’m sure I’m missing some…
“Seven Nation Army” won my vote. “Bring Me to Life” is dead-ass last, with a dishonorable mention going to “Headstrong.” For a short while, that song was in every commercial for every football game, every truck commercial, and the like. It annoyed the hell out of me.
Man, I love a lot of the songs on this list. But I had to give it to the White Stripes because 7 Nation Army rocks the most.
